Demons given second shot to play in Orange

Gabriel Pruett

The Orange Leader

The Southeast Texas Demons put on a nice show this past Saturday, unfortunately someone had too much of a good time.

Clean up crews after the game discovered various forms of alcoholic bottles around the campus of West Orange-Stark Middle School and quickly informed the school district.

WO-S Athletics Director Dan Hooks made a call to Demons' Coach Chip Pierce and told him the team was not welcome at the middle school anymore

Pierce informed the Leader of this at Thursday’s practice.

Superintendent Dr. O. Taylor Collins then said the team would have one more shot at getting it right when it came to security at the games.

Collins then on Friday reported the Demons would be allowed to play at WO-S Middle School on Aug. 4 under close supervision.

“They assured me they will meet the expectations of the trustees and of myself,†Collins said in a phone interview. “I hope to be around personally to check on things. If all goes well then I will approve the next one. They also are going to give the district more money for extra custodial workers. I wish them well and hope they win.â€

The alcohol being on the campus grounds is a serious problem considering the number of children who roam around the facility each day during school hours.

Police officials were seen at the game and seemed to be watching over what was a nice sized ground, one that also seemed to be properly behaved.

While the final judgement deserves to fall on the Demons’ shoulders, the team should not be considered a bust at this time and discarded so quickly out of town.

At the next home game at WOS Middle School there should be an effort to watch activities of both the fans and teams combined.

Collins should be applauded giving the team another shot at succeeding in Orange because the city of Orange can really benefit from the semi-pro team being in the city.

The team is full of local talent playing a game they love and that brings family and friends from all over Southeast Texas to games to watch their favorite player.

If problems continue then it will be time to looking into the team being exorcised from the city.
