Who is your most talented unrecognized high school athlete?

Do anyone have an idea who are the top five scorers among S.E. Texas boys high school varsity basketball?

Also, an article mentioned Braelon Bush as the current top scorer in Silsbee Tigers history but failed to give the name of the player he surpassed. Any idea who that was?

There were quite a few "unrecognized" talented ones that weren't widely recognized by the media, back in the day in Silsbee. Some who excelled in alley pickup games were better than the ones who were star varsity players, but didn't have the support system at home that would allow them the extra time for extra-curricular participation. Others weren't as acclaimed because their exploits came on teams before integration. A few that I remember were "Big" Fisher, "Moochie" White, Cozell Shaw, Marvin Lee,...etc.  But the most talented in my opinion was Cozell's baby brother, Lyndell Shaw.

Lyndell was widely acclaimed at Waldo Mathews in the old PV league in four sports....football, track, baseball, & basketball. He transferred across town to Silsbee High and was the first black quarterback to play in a game for the Tigers. Because of circumstances he didn't continue very long with the Tigers.

But, he was scouted by the Houston Colt 45's baseball team and accepted their offer to try-out as a catcher. Tragically, Lyndell drowned the day before he was to report for spring training. In a short article about his death, one of the baseball team's scout said he had one of "the fastest bats" he'd ever seen. Oh yea...Frank Robinson was an uncle of Lyndell and Cozell.

Elvin Earl Spearman Silsbee 1992-95. Ended up not playing on the 1994-95 Silsbee basketball team that lost to Lincoln at the Montage Center. If Silsbee had Spearman, they beat Lincoln. Not sure the circumstances why he couldn't play in Silsbee, but he moved to Buna and averaged 25ppg that year. Seen him at Silsbee high school one day and 3 days later he was in Buna. He was about 6'2 or 6'3 and could ball.

I know the Spearman family....good athletes, good people. Funny tho you should mention Buna (Bessmay). Not many hoopster back in the day finer than Eddie "Goose Cree" Crockett. He eventually transferred to Charlton-Pollard in Beaumont...had a storied career as a Bulldog. Buna football also produced running back Benny Lee Cotton.  He was unbelievable,,,speed, strength, agility!
