ESPN Posted April 26, 2006 Report Posted April 26, 2006 4/26/06 SABINE LAKE: Trout fishing has been great during the lulls in the wind. No monster trout but plenty of good keepers have been caught from mid-lake to the North end of the lake. LURES: Pumpkin/Char or Glo/Char on 1/4 ounce jig head. They can be fished straight or on a "Mauler". Rattle Traps, Hogan R's, Spoons, and some top water lures are producing. Reds and Flounder are scattered and slow in the lake. SABINE RIVER: Using the same lures as in the open lake some nice trout have been stacked up in 12 to 15 feet of water on points. Vertical fishing works just fine once you locate the fish. Reds are scarce but river flounder fishing is very good. The Bass action is slow and the fish are small. BIG LAKE: Trout action very strong in West Cove. Most anglers using live shrimp fished under the birds. Some trout to 9 pounds have been caught this past week. TOLEDO BEND: Bass action o.k. but the fish are small. You may have to go through 15 or 20 to catch 8 keepers. Wacky worms, Carolina rigs and Texas rig worms in 8 to 12 feet of water on the flats best daytime shot. Night fishing is better with the small Frog getting a lot of use. No really large bass reported in either case. Crappie action is great on 1/8th ounce jigs with a black/chartreuse or Smoke/silver trailer. These fish caught "Strolling" in 10 to 12 feet of water. Once you locate some nice Crappie you can go back and forth in the same area. A 47 pound Opp was caught on the South end last week. SAM RAYBURN: Several 9 pound bass caught in the big tournament last weekend. Some on small crank baits in 8 to 12 feet of water, some on Carolina rigs on small "Brush Hogs", lizards and worms. Water melon Green with red flakes or Pumpin with green flakes were popular colors. The Sinko in the same colors took bass in the 6 to 10 foot water both inside and outside the grass lines. The spawn is just about over and the bass are moving out more toward the 12 foot or deeper water. Crappie fishing is very good on Sam Rayburn also with small "Road Runners" with a black/chartreuse trailer fished along the edge of the grass producing some really nice fish.
