LITTLE CYPRESS — The Little Cypress-Mauriceville Battlin’ Bears are anxious.

Coach Todd Moody is ready to get the boys on the field and start practice.

Moody and the Bears have just a few days to go as the team will report to the weight room at 7:30 a.m. Monday with the first practice at about 8 a.m.

What has Bear Country so excited is the a strong returning group of starters and a summer that saw more guys participate than ever before in Moody’s three seasons at LC-M.

“Our kids encourage each other and really hold each other accountable for the team,†Moody said. “This group is excited about getting back out there and are also excited about the year ahead of them. That makes me excited about being their coach.â€

The Bears are coming off a 5-5 season and return four starters on both offense and defense.

Headlining the offense will be the quarterback-tailback combination of President Driver and Kendrex Salter.

Driver threw for 916 yards a year ago on 46-of-84 passing with 10 touchdowns.

Salter is back after rushing for 722 yards with nine touchdowns on 127 carries.

The defense will be led by Joseph Viator who had 97 tackles.

LC-M’s defense allowed just 272.9 yards a game a year ago while the offense churned out 281.2 yards a contest. LC-M outscored its opponents 194-140 a season ago.

The Bears travel to Willis for a scrimmage on Aug. 18 that starts at 6 p.m. before traveling to Bridge City on Aug. 23 for a scrimmage with freshman starting at 5 p.m.

The first real game will be on Aug. 31 when the Bears play host to Conroe Caney Creek. The plays then play host to West Orange-Stark Sept. 7 before Houston Kashmere travels to LC-M on Sept. 14.

The Bears have Sept. 21 open before starting District 22-4A play at home against Beaumont Central on Sept. 28.

“The first week we just want to get back into the routine,†Moody said. “We like to see how much they recall. We always look forward to when they put the pads on for the first time and that will be on Friday. It is always a little different when they put the pads on.â€

Another aspect of the first week of practice is getting the team prepared to deal with the heat Southeast Texas can bear down.

“It’s Southeast Texas weather,†Moody added. “The kids will just have to truck through it. They learn how to take care of themselves and how to be smart. We just have to get them ready for it and the coaches need to be ready for it.â€

The Bears practice schedule for the first week will start at 8 a.m. and run through 11 a.m. The team will restart things at 5 p.m. and finish around 7 p.m. On Thursday the Bears will only practice from 5-7 p.m.
