Young Cardinals set to hit the practice field

Gabe Pruett

BRIDGE CITY — A lot has changed at Bridge City High School since the last time the Cardinals were on the football field.

Gone is former coach Claude Tarver and so is two-year starting quarterback Johnny Dishon.

In is first-year Head Coach Cris Stump and the quarterback question is still up in the air.

What is not a question is that the Cardinals will report at 7 a.m. Monday to pick up equipment for sophomores, juniors and seniors with the first practice slated for 8 a.m.

Bridge City figures to be done with the first practice at 9:30 a.m. and starting back up at 10:30 a.m. until noon.

Freshman report at 3 p.m. with their first practice from 4-5:30 p.m.

Stump reported that will be the schedule for the first week of practice and the Cardinals will put on pads for the first time on Friday.

Stump is getting excited about holding the Cardinals first practice because it will also be his first practice as a head coach.

“Everything is going to be new to them,†Stump added. “I expect the kids to continue what we saw in the spring. We can only wait and see. They took pretty well to what they were being told in the spring.â€

The Cardinals will be looking to replace Dishon who rushed for 1,178 yards and 11 touchdowns a year ago as the Cardinals went 6-4 overall.

Bridge City gained 251.3 yards a contest a year ago while giving up 301.3 yards on defense. They were outscored 209-191 in 2006.

“We had a great turnout over the summer with our guys lifting weights,†Stump said. “

The Cardinals’ first scrimmage comes on Aug. 18 when they travel to Anahuac to face the Panthers. Freshmen will start at 9 a.m., JV is slated for 10 a.m. and varsity should kick off near 11 a.m.

Bridge City will then play host to LC-M Aug. 23 with a tentative time frame set for freshman at 5 p.m., JV at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.

The Cardinals open their non-district schedule by playing host to Liberty Aug. 31 before having an off week Sept. 7.

The Cardnals travel to Lumberton Sept. 14 before Beaumont Kelly comes to Bridge City Sept. 21.

Stump and the Cardinals open the District 21-3A season with a road trip to Sour Lake to face the Hardin-Jefferson Hawks on Sept. 28.
