You do know that we've been "occupying" Japan since the end of WW2 right? 

Besides that fact, most were never worried about Japan because it has: 

A. A small population

B. A small military

C. They are allied with us

In comparison, communist China has: 

A. A large population

B. A large militarily 

C. They are not allied with us. 

Do you now understand why some people are worried about it?

How old were you in ‘85?  Japan had second largest economy back then, not China. The paranoia about Japanese ownership of American assets was through the roof. Just sayin’, there’s always a bogeyman. Be concerned, sure, but not to the freak out levels we see today.
