Lady Bears survive Lady Dogs in 5

LITTLE CYPRESS — The Beaumont Kelly Bulldogs played a pretty smart match Tuesday night at Little Cypress-Mauriceville High School.

The more chances the Lady Bears gave, the more the Lady Bulldogs accepted.

It took five games for the Lady Bears to get past the Lady Bulldogs and an easy way to see gifts LC-M gave Kelly is quite simple.

LC-M had a player finish with more kills than the entire Kelly squad, meaning it was not the Lady Bulldogs attack putting pressure on the Lady Bears.

LC-M (5-4) finished off Kelly 25-15, 23-25, 25-17, 24-26 and 15-3.

Lady Bears’ sophomore Christine Sicktich led a powerful LC-M attack with 19 kills, 10 assists and six aces. Senior Morgan Blohm and Kinsey Staudt had terrific matches as well as Blohm finished with 11 kills and Staudt added 10.

Adding to the offense was the beautiful sets from both Kristi Trahan and Alexa Humble. Trahan had 15 assists to go with seven kills while Humble added 13 helpers.

Kelly’s scrappy play had its fans all fired up heading into the fifth game but LC-M came out and eliminated the hitting and serving errors.

“In the first and last game we did not have as many errors,†LC-M Coach Vicki Castino said. “You cannot win games when you give the other team points.â€

That proved to be true in the final game as the serve from Shayna Sheppard and Sicktich were all the Lady Bears needed.

The two combined for 11 service points in the final frame with Sheppard hitting for four straight and Sicktich hitting for the game’s final seven.

LC-M’s Jordyn Davis, who put in seven kills, finished the match off with a kill of her own.

The Lady Bears got off to a quick start in the first game after the score being tied at two.

Sheppard broke off six straight service points to give LC-M the 8-2 lead.

Kelly found itself down 21-11 before Layne Ford hit for four straight points.

Sheppard then ended the game with two straight service points giving the Lady Bears the 25-15 win.

LC-M appeared to take control of the second game behind the serve of Carly Gauthier, who finished with five aces.

Gauthier served up six straight points, including three aces, to give LC-M a 16-10 lead.

With LC-M serving and nursing a 21-19 lead, a LC-M shot found the net and started a downward spiral.

Eventually three more hitting errors led to Kelly’s 25-23 win.

The Lady Bulldogs in the third were the ones making the errors late in the game with Sicktich serving and LC-M up 21-17.

Sicktich struck for an ace before the next three Kelly shots found the net giving the Lady Bears a 25-17 victory in Game 3.

The Lady Bears were one point from winning with a 24-22.

A LC-M shot then found the net before Kelly’s Maggie McCauley, who had six kills, slammed home a winner.

LC-M then had two more errors letting Kelly slide away with a 26-24 win.

The Lady Bears return to action Friday in pool play of the Northwest Tournament in Dallas.

Other teams in LC-M’s pool include Lake Travis, Highland Park and Mid-Lothian.

Bracket play for the tournament will be on Saturday.
