Topic: Feed Back Needed on Goose Seasons

    Posted: 20 August 2007 at 2:20pm

We have received a lot of comments on the goose season structure regarding dark geese in the Eastern Zone.  With the different days allowed for different species of geese (i.e. light geese and canada geese 107 days, white-fronted geese 72 days) and duck (74 days designed for a split season) seasons that are shorter than goose seasons, having all seasons run concurrent is extremely difficult.  Currently we have an 86 day canada and snow goose season that runs concurrent with duck season.  Many have commented that whitefront season should be delayed 2 weeks so that all goose seasons and duck season close on the same day.  This would mean that the canada and snow goose season would be different openings than the whitefronts.  We have always strived to have seasons open when birds are available and the migration chronology data for whitefronts indicate more birds are on the coast in November than January, thus we have always opened them concurrent with the duck season.  Our commission would likely frown on choosing a season structure that does not take advantage of peak abundances.  So, with all this being said the options that we currently have are leave it as is with a season-within-a-season on dark geese with whitefronts closing 2 weeks earlier or 86 days and 1 whitefront. If an 86 day 1 whitefront season were selected then we could have all goose seasons open the same time, run concurrent with the duck season and all close the same day.  Thoughts on a one bird bag?

Thanks!
