Guest bleed orange Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 Congrats to Buna, they played well. This game is always intense. The Bobcats played hard but it was just not our night. Buna was the better team and it was apparent from the opening kick-off.
BUNA95 Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 good job guys. Hope this is a sign of how the season will go
Bobkat Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 Wow...Buna has a pretty good football team!!! They whipped us in every phase of the game. They will give East Chambers all they want for that district title this year. The have good size on both sides of the ball and are very quick. They get in that nastly slot and just run right at you...several times tonight I didn't know who had the ball. They will make some noise this year!!!Orangefield, keep your heads up. Turnovers have been a huge problem in out two scrimmages and that continued tonight. Several fumbles and interceptions...one int was returned for a touchdown right before half. That was a huge play. It completely turned the game around. If Orangefield scores on that drive, it's 14-12 going into the half...even if they don't score, the score's probably 14-6 at half. But just like that it's 21-6 and the momentum is with the cougars. Several kids for Orangefield played their first varsity game tonight and that showed at times, but these sophmores and a few juniors will learn from tonight and get better. Turnovers are huge to every game, but until we block and tackle better we're in trouble. Your not gonna beat teams when you don't block or tackle and your definetly not going to beat good teams when you don't do either. Keep your heads up Cats!!!
KFDM COOP Posted September 1, 2007 Report Posted September 1, 2007 Buna's rushing attacks blasts OF, 35-12Jason RollinsonThe Orange LeaderORANGEFIELD — The Buna Cougars gave the Orangefield’s young defense some quick experience Friday night, handing the Bobcats a 35-12 loss at F.L. McClain Stadium in the season opener for both schools.Buna’s Anthony Smith rushed 12 times for 83 yards and two touchdowns while adding a third score, a 36-yard interception return. But, as big as Smith was for the Cougars rushing attack, which ground out 325 yards on 50 carries, he wasn’t even the top rusher for Buna. Blanton Craft led all rushers with 116 yards on 13 carries and a touchdown.Orangefield’s defense lacks experience, with just one returning starter from last year’s squad, and will need time to grow, Bobcat coach Blake Morrison said.“I thought the coaching staff prepared as hard as we could for this game,†Morrison said. “When you have a lot of kids that are new on the varsity level, it’s going to take some time. We’ve got a long ways to go. The speed of the game was faster than we expected and that will only fix itself with time.â€On offense, senior Jared Helton moved over from his wideout position to take the Bobcat snaps and faced quite a challenge replacing three-year starter Brett Ramsey. Helton completed 5-of-8 passes for 103 yards with 2 interceptions and 2 touchdown strikes and led his team in rushing with 34 yards on 16 totes. His favorite receiver, Devon Green, hauled in four passes for 93 yards and two scores. The Bobcats totaled 200 yards of offense, with 97 coming on the ground and 103 through the air.“Buna is a good football team and played with a lot of confidence. The kids understand the scheme and just took care of business,†Morrison stated.Buna struck quick in the first quarter with a 62-yard scamper by Craft and after a Kyle Clark extra-point kick, his first of five successful boots, the Cougars led 7-0 with just 20 ticks off the clock.Later in the quarter, a Caleb Worthy 36-yard interception return set up the Bobcats’ first score. Helton found Green open in the end zone for a 22-yard scoring strike. The kick failed and the ‘Cats trailed 7-6 with 3:53 left in the first.Buna responded with a 65-yard drive capped off by a 3-yard keeper by quarterback Justin Carrell to take a 14-6 lead with 10:19 remaining in the first half.Smith then intercepted Helton’s pass at the Buna 36 and took it back 64 yards for another six points, and the Clark kick gave the Cougars a 21-6 edge at the break. The Bobcats cut the deficit to 21-12 on their first drive of the second half.Helton completed a 55-yard fly pattern to Green on a 3rd-and-7 play at the Orangefield 45 for his second touchdown of the evening with 10:10 left in the third.Buna held the Bobcats in check the rest of the game and was able to tack on two more scores, a 13-yard draw by Smith with 5:05 left in the third and a 5-yard plunge by Smith with 10:36 remaining in the fourth to seal the victory. It won’t get any easier for Orangefield as another 24-2A team awaits a trip to the Bobcats’ turf. East Chambers, which blanked Shepherd, 38-0 Friday, will take its power running attack led by fourth-year starting quarterback Traimain Thomas into Orangefield next week.“We’ll see a similar type of offensive scheme as we saw tonight for several of our future opponents,†Morrison said. “East Chambers runs the two-tight, and Splendora and Hamshire-Fannett like to run the Wing-T also. The kids have a week under their belt. We’ll see what happens next week and hopefully get better.â€Buna 35, Orangefield 12
