WOSgrad Posted June 28, 2020 Report Posted June 28, 2020 2020 HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL PREVIEWS PORTER SPARTANS 2019 Record: 9-3 Overall, 6-1 District Runner up in District 9-5A-I Porter Spartans head coach Jim Holley continued to work his magic at Porter High School, taking the Spartans to the playoffs in every year of his four year tenure. To extend that streak to five, Holley will have to rely on a mix of youngsters and veterans (5 offensive starters and 4 starting defenders return) in a district that will be pretty difficult to navigate. COACHING Head Coach: Jim Holley Assistant Coaches: Dougald McDougald (Assistant Head Coach/Co-Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers), Billy Russell (Offensive Coordinators/Quarterbacks), Chris McDougald (Co-Defensive Coordinator/Safeties), David Evans-Pickens (Strength and Speed Coordinator/Running Backs), Mark Newton (Special Teams Coordinator/Cornerbacks), David Wilding (Offensive Line), Cody Green (Defensive Line), Matt McDougald (Wide Receivers), Matthew Baca (Defensive End/Slots), Wayne Ralph (Head Coach-Freshman), Blake Krukiel (Freshmen), Rueben Bloom (Freshmen), Stephen Jarboe (Freshman), Todd Foley (Freshmen), Paul Kunkel (Kickers) OFFENSE Five starters return to the Spartan spread offense in 2020. Taking over at quarterback will be senior Jace Russell. Senior running back Avry Porter-Campbell (1st team all-district) will be back to shoulder the Porter rushing load but expect sophomore Josh Evans-Pickens to get some carries as well. Senior wide outs Caleb Evans-Pickens (2nd team all-district at fullback in 2019) and Jaylynn Briley will head a Spartan receiver corp which will include senior Luke Cordell and junior receiver Julian Walker. Senior linemen Aurelio Alonzo (1st team all-district) and Journey Ray Santos (2nd team all-district) will lead an offensive line which will also include senior Nestro Palma. DEFENSE Four starters return to the Spartan 3-3 stack defense in 2020. Senior defensive end Quincy Montgomery and senior linemen Jose Lopez and Raylen Davis will man the front line. Senior outside linebacker Charles Bosley (1st team all-district) and Jaiden Knight will lead the Porter linebackers. Senior free safety Austin Perkins (1st team all-district) and Cordell, at cornerback, (1st team all-district) will direct a secondary which will also feature Caleb and Josh Evans-Pickens at safety, as well as senior safety J.B. Briley and senior cornerback Caleb Morris. SPECIAL TEAMS 1st team all-district kicker Jose Acosta will be counted on to do both the kicking and punting while Holley intends on using several returners.
