Texas high school football coaches brace for delayed, interrupted 2020 season

Their is no way that situation can happen. Β

That's easy. A coach and a few kds test positive. That team has to forfeit the next two games at least because the other schools don't want to play them.Β

But in an ironic way, you might be right. They may not play at all.

A couple of MLS teams have been booted from their season opening tournament. NBA stars in the bubble have tested positive. MLB players can't get good testing so they can practice.

College football will soon be moving to the spring like Jr college did on Monday. NFL players are balking at training camp and playing two preseason games. some would like the season start to be pushed back a few weeks.

The pros are having a hard time keeping people on the field and they got the money and doctors to make it happen. HS? Getting the kids back in the classroomΒ  at this point is going to be a miracle.Β

I don't think there's enough time between now and the start of the season to reach a peak and then come down. We blew it by not social distancing after reopening the way too early.Β

All these officials are scared to say what they know they must do, start school online and suspend extracurricular activities until a later date.Β

Did your school extend the deadline to decide whether to homeschool or not? Mine did. I think they were hoping more people would sign up for home schooling and they didn't get the numbers they need to social distance. it's going to be an interesting August.

Online school is a pathetic joke..

When my boys were 15 you couldn’t get them to sit down and do their driver’s ed courses, and they had a license waiting as a reward. There’s no chance they’d do anything school-related without somebody standing over the top of them. Β Most householdsΒ don’t have the luxury of doing that.Β
Β

I say just hit the pause button. Hold off on reopening schools until we’re all comfortable. But halt teacher and administration pay until they reopen. Kids don’t advance in grades, either. If they don’t graduate high school until they’re 22 or 23, so be it.Β

So much for that five grand raise we gave em all last year. Β Now they won’t even show up and do their jobs anymore.

Ive been saying for years that teachers collectively overestimate the value of their profession, and the pandemic is just proving my point. Β If you can leave your job undone for five months and be asking for that leave to be extended for an indefinite period, and nobody cares except for the loss of babysitting.... well, there you go.Β

I agree. It was an exercise in frustration on both ends. But the virus is worse now than when they shut it down in the spring.

Schools around Houston are all doing three weeks online to start. They're just easing us into the inevitable of year long online classes. Which is both BS and somewhat understandable.Β

Why not just split the grades up so they go to school twice a week so everyone can see the teacher in person?Β

Greg Abbott promised more information this week from TEA. hopefully it'll be some definitive answers.

So, if we halt teacher pay, who builds that curriculum for the online learning? Are you going to do that? I'm assuming not since you don't have the time to make sure your kids are getting their work done without standing over the top of them.

Also, don't assume most teachers aren't ok with going back to work. As we have learned in today's climate, just because a groups voices are louder than the rest doesn't mean they represent the majority. Trumps election in 2016 proved that to be the case.

Endless Summer, baby....Β

Nobody thinks online is an acceptable replacement for in-classroom instruction. We'll just kick the whole thing back off when the teachers feel it's completely safe and THEY are ready to get back to work.Β  TheΒ major push to avoid returning to schools is coming from the schools themselves.Β  I think that those objections clear right up when you shut off their paychecks.Β Β

Don't take my word for it... we all have teacher friends on Facebook.Β  Go check 'em out.Β  It's not too dangerous to go to Austin, Fredricksburg, the lake, the beach, Colorado, etc.... it's just not safe to go back to class.Β

Way more kids died from the Flu this past season than the Covid-19, and way more adults have died from Covid-19 in the ages 65 and above and with underlying conditions for the most part.Β  Now the vast (not all)Β  amount of teachers are well under 65 years of age.Β  So in my opinion we just need to open the schools and quit living in fear that some politicians and a lot of the media are shoving down our throats.Β Β

There’s other problems with starting online. Β MostΒ teachers will haveΒ a whole classroom of new students. Β They won’t know the students. Β Which ones need extra help? Β  Which ones parents are doing their work? Β  Were I a teacher, I’d be concerned about that.

As Eagleforever said, if we wait until Covid is no more, it’ll be years. Β  Prayers our leaders make the right decisions.

I work for a school district and I ve been pushing for them to start like normal. Β I don’t live in fear. Β I ve done my own research. I’m not scared of flu or tb so why should I be scared of covid....

kids learn best when there is schedule and routine.

texas high school football is probably one of the best events in Texas....

I know some schools Admins (conservative leaning) are starting like normal with parents having theΒ option of online.

In your research, did you see where there isΒ NOT a cure or a vaccine for the virus? Don't live in fear but you better respect this virus. We will be reading your story on FB talking about how you wish you would have taken the necessary precautions to try and prevent catching this virus. I hope as a teacher you lead by example and practice social distancing, sanitize and wear your mask..........ESPECIALLY if they allow kids to return to school here in the next few weeks.Β

There s no cure for the flu either....people get the flu shot and sometimes still get it. Viruses mutate......

I respect it. Β Me and my wifeΒ Got the covid before this came a big deal (mid December)Β and beat it without any help from doctors. Oh and I have 5 kids and none of them got it. Β  VirusesΒ have to run its course.

i don’t have Facebook or any other type of social media. Β This site is the only one I communicate on.

i will do what ever my employer says. Β

again we are just hurting healthy people s immunities. Β Those that haveΒ underlying issues are the ones that need to protect themselves. Not the healthy ones. Β

Just curious.... How many kids have died from this disease since it started?

This is the hidden content, please

As of 7/9.... a grand total of 69 kids in the US have been reported as dying from COVID.Β  Keep in mind that some states are counting people aged 0-24 years as "children."

Who knows how accurate that this is.Β  And I agree that "even one life lost is one life too many."Β  But i'm going to go out on a limb and say that we're losing more kids to bicycle crashes and drownings.Β

It's time to get back to school and make adjustments when (because they will happen) outbreaks occur.

We lose more kids to abortion....where is the humanity s concern.

If it’s a situation that we can prevent folks from catching it, I’m al for it vs chancing it where you catch it and you COULD die. Β Everyone don’t have the ability to fight this off. Β I just hope when this vaccine clears the final stages of testing that this can prevent more lives from being lost. Β
