Texas high school football coaches brace for delayed, interrupted 2020 season

I don’t know if I’ve said this already on this site, but if it will keep all of our kids (all of SETX athletes) safe, just shut all the HS sports down this year and take no chances.  It sucks for us, but at this point, I’m prepared to be without HS sports and auxiliary for a year.

If it’s a situation that we can prevent folks from catching it, I’m al for it vs chancing it where you catch it and you COULD die.  Everyone don’t have the ability to fight this off.  I just hope when this vaccine clears the final stages of testing that this can prevent more lives from being lost.

You can almost instantly tell if a person's living is "guaranteed" or not based on their answer to that question of whether or not to stay home.  My guess is that if the governor said "we'll start teacher pay back up when in-class school resumes, teachers would instantly lose their objections to returning to class.   The sad thing is that most people with "guaranteed" money don't realize that it's only slightly more "guaranteed."  When people can't pay their school taxes because we shut down schools "just in case" it's gonna be sad times in teacher land.

Other than the bars and sports, all other industries are back in business. Except education. Kids can't go to school, but they can dang sure bag your groceries and fry up your McChicken.

If there's one thing this has taught us, we can survive without sports.  We can survive without movies and concerts.

Isn't it crazy that we idolize, follow, and imitate athletes and celebrities who have been proven to be non-essential by Covid?

These stories float around.  I personally know a young lady who was bad sick during late February.  She hasn't been since..... but she does have the antibodies.  She wasn't tested at the time and everybody just assumed "flu."  Who knows?

That's easy. A coach and a few kds test positive. That team has to forfeit the next two games at least because the other schools don't want to play them

But in an ironic way, you might be right. They may not play at all.

A couple of MLS teams have been booted from their season opening tournament. NBA stars in the bubble have tested positive. MLB players can't get good testing so they can practice.

College football will soon be moving to the spring like Jr college did on Monday. NFL players are balking at training camp and playing two preseason games. some would like the season start to be pushed back a few weeks.

The pros are having a hard time keeping people on the field and they got the money and doctors to make it happen. HS? Getting the kids back in the classroom  at this point is going to be a miracle.

I don't think there's enough time between now and the start of the season to reach a peak and then come down. We blew it by not social distancing after reopening the way too early.

All these officials are scared to say what they know they must do, start school online and suspend extracurricular activities until a later date.

Did your school extend the deadline to decide whether to homeschool or not? Mine did. I think they were hoping more people would sign up for home schooling and they didn't get the numbers they need to social distance. it's going to be an interesting August.

I don’t think UIL is in the business of punishing coaches and students for getting sick. Why make up rules in the middle of the game? IMO schools would probably file law suits quick fast and in a hurry.

They didn’t have a test. They couldn’t tell me what it was but that it was more than likely a virus.  They tested me for everything.
I ve never been as sick as I was then. It lasted about 9 days. I stayed hydrated and rested.  With viruses they have to run there course.  it took me  2 months to get my breathing right.  I’m a runner.  I ran 10 to 15 miles in a 5 day week....I know my body really well.  I had to really push myself to get back to my norm.
And yes antibodies are present.

That’s the thing most haven’t come to grips with yet.  Unlike the flu, which leaves in the summer, we know this virus doesn’t mind hot or cold.  And still, only about 5% have had it, that we know of.   This thing will be with us for many years to come.   Will we forgo normalcy for years?   No classroom teaching?  No extracurricular activities for the kids?    I won’t even go into the adult world with this speculation.   It’s going to be a long row to hoe.

A few people testing positive in an office is enough to shut down a lot of places. As we've seen this summer, a few cases have shut down whole summer workouts. It's been the afflicted school that has cancelled workouts.  And they would probably cancel their games out of an abundance of safety for the other schoolw.

Besides, do you want to play someone with the virus? If so, you're braver than me.

I just don't see how this sport can be played at this level without transmission.

Do you think that all human interaction should go away? What about restaurants...shut them down? Church? Refineries? Doctors offices? Pharmacies? Traffic stops? Daycare? All businesses that require an on-site human element? Everything?

I'm doing my part to cut down on this dumb "biblical donkey" virus by minimizing my trips to the bare minimum.

I haven't been to a restaurant since March.

I'm good on not sitting in an enclosed space with strangers for long periods of times until we get a vaccine. Church is online now, so is the Doctor. if we got rid of traffic stops forever, that would be wonderful. Pharmacy have drive throughs a so I haven't been to a counter in years.

Refineries today, the Boardman can monitor it from his house with a good VPN, internet access and with radios, the operators can social distance and check on equipment as alarms arise.

I've been involved in projects where they remote start a power plant and by the time they make the hour long drive to the site it's up and running.

Football is a a contact sport. you have to touch other people to be successful. so you're breathing on people and they're breathing on you.

And unlike the pros, who can afford to quarantine their players and test daily, our schools and communities can't. I'm pretty sure if Livingston had an outbreak and we were on your schedule this Friday, you wouldn't want to play that game.

In small 5A and down, there are a lot of two way players. Best practices says if you're exposed to COVID is to quarantine for two weeks and then get a clear test before venturing out in the world.

I would like to have a season. I just haven't see any good guidance that shows this is going to be safe. I would feel better if this was moved to the spring when we are supposed to have vaccines.

You are clueless partner.

In a refinery, which is the life blood of ALL of SE Texas, who does maintenance, fixes things, keeps things going, builds new units and expansions? Thousands of refinery workers and contractors on-site which, I dare say, is the only reason for Beaumont / Port Arthur/ Orange and all points in between.

Do you take communion online?

Can the doctor take blood, look down your throat, perform x-rays or tests online?

The first time you heard of fatal car accidents, did you quit driving? I could literally go on all day with these little self-evident examples, but I won’t.
You might want to get a grip. Peace out.

You don't need all the people you think you do in a a refinery. There's a reason why the Golden has been taken out of Golden Triangle. It's called Automation. The new units only need 3-4 people to operate production. It used to take 10 times the amount of people to operate such facilities. The only time you need massive amount of people is for maintenance and turnarounds. That's a one time deal. The area isn't growing because it refuses to diversify.

Same with electric substations, power plants and pipeline structures, which are operated remotely. You only send people out there when there's a problem.

I know this because I design these facilities.

99 percent of traffic stops are fishing expeditions that target minorities, even though white people are more likely to be carrying contraband. So yes, kill out traffic stops and save the officers to clear traffic accidents and escort funeral processionals.

If you really need an x-ray, you're going to the doctor because you're messed up, but most of the visits we make don't involve that. it's my head hurts, or I got a little cough so just give me some pills so I can feel better.

Communion? There's always grape juice.

You missed my point. if we would have stayed in, then we wouldn't be in this situation now. I'd like to see the games but I'm not so sure that now is the best time to play a contact sport when there's not any good guidance on how to play and minimize transmission. There's 1200 HS teams and there's no way to quarantine each team like there is in the pros. And our kids are playing for their enjoyment, not money. So there's no economic incentive for the participants, only the risk of catching a disease that could result in long term health risks and even death.

You may be okay with the risks, but a lot of people aren't. That doesn't make them less tough than you. It just means they prioritize their health over other entertainment.

You need to climb in a hole and seal it up. Better get off this board via laptop/cell phone/pc. You might get a virus. Hope you have a good life looking over your shoulder.

Just curious if you have any kids in high school? I have a daughter who will be a senior this year. If school and sports are shut down it will greatly effect where she goes to college, scholarship opportunities, if she continues to play sports, and many other aspects of her life.  I also was very close to several students who were students this past spring when things go shut down.  You don’t get that year back. It’s easy as adults to dismiss how important school,  prom, graduation, and youth and high school sports are.  They shape what kind of adults we become. There has already been harm done to students, athletes, schools, and colleges that will take a long while to recover. If things continue to be negatively effected then the damage done may never be able to be fixed.  Views on this tend to be based on how it effects you personally. Since this started almost all negative effects for me and all the people I know closely have been from the lockdowns not the virus. My wife’s uncle spent a couple days in the hospital with COVID and he was extremely high risk but recovered and is fine.  If you continue to take away freedoms from people your leading them into a dark place.  I don’t mind the social distancing and even the mask wearing but I can’t see shutting down schools and the economy any more unless you are ok with starting a major change in America as we know it.  It’s been said over and over but it’s true. The cure can’t be worse than the disease. The country has been through numerous crisis in the past including pandemics and never reacted this way.  I feel like people should be responsible enough to decide for themselves the path. If enough people had been adversely effected by the disease you wouldn’t see them filling every restaurant to capacity, wanting schools open, or sports to resume.

To answer your first question, yes.  I have an incoming Junior that’s involved in band.  He’s a top 10% student and is also actively involved in other organizations, such as NHS, National Beta club (he’s slated to hold a position for that club).  Everything sucks right now, but you have to look at the big picture.  He sees the big picture even though he loves school and his organizations that he’s in.

When you quoted me above, I was speaking for the well being of all kids.  I’d hate to see these kids suffering sick or worse.  Take a step back and take draconian measures, especially for the kids.

If there was any evidence at all that kids would end up sick then I could see that viewpoint.  The overwhelming evidence suggests they are in much worse danger driving to school or to athletic event than even getting seriously ill from COVID, much less dying.  It's hard for kids in our area to see the "Big Picture" when they don't know anyone in their county, or even in the surrounding ones that has died from the virus.  My daughter had a bone marrow transplant when she was young so she would fall into the immune-compromised category.  From the start our family has tried to gather as much information as we could to make good decisions on how much risk to take.  Sifting through all the propaganda and politically driven agenda's is hard but we made the decision if travel softball kicked back up then she would be playing.  I worry too may decisions are made just to protect government, schools, and people from liability if something does happen, no matter how small the chance.

It goes deeper than that as he as well as myself knows people , friends, and a family member that’s died from Covid-19.  Ive even had a classmate gain his wings.

IMO, this is nothing to take lightly.  People are taking this lightly because our leadership....  well, never mind.  This is not the political forum so....

What about the teachers and coaches? Or the kids Grandparents? Kids might not get sick but they can carry it.

I respect your views, especially since you have a school-aged child. Sounds like you’ve got a good kid on your hands. I love hearing about good kids. Seems as though we tend to concentrate on the bad stuff too often. My son, an incoming senior, he is more important to me than life itself, as I’m sure your boy is to you too.  He was in a near fatal accident last year, almost 2 weeks before first football practice. It was a year and 8 days ago, as a matter of fact. I can still barely talk about it in front of people because my eyes start stinging, and I know the tears are right behind. After a torn PCL, head full of stitches, “new” used truck and a lot of prayer and thanks to God, I have to tell him he probably won’t get to play football at all that year. I’ve never seen him cry like he did that day. With tears streaming down his face, he grabbed me by the arm and literally pulled me outside. Both eyes black and swollen, bandage around his head, knee brace on and limping, he starts running 15 yard sprints out of a 3 point stance. He would stop, turn around, get in a stance, say “hit” and sprint off the “line” again.  He’s shouting at me as if I can’t see him, “See Dad, I can play. I can run. “Hit” off he goes again. He’s streaming tears and running and yelling at me all at the same time. He falls after 5 or 6 sprints from the knee injury. I picked him up and hugged him and told him to come inside. We made a decision to forgo surgery until at least after the season, and he missed all the scrimmages and most of the non-district games, but he actually played every district and playoff game. He had a decent season. And he’s got one more left. Ain’t no way I’m gonna tell my baby boy he can’t play after that. He is healthy and I feel like Covid is the least of his worries. Every morning when he leaves for work or summer workouts, the app on my phone tells me he’s just left the house. It scares the living she-it out of me. Especially since his wreck. But I still let him drive. I still let him live. And I’m not trying to sway you or anyone else into doing anything differently. I just had to explain that life is a risk. We take them every day...much bigger ones than dealing with this virus that most healthy people endure. I hope the very best for your son. I hope his senior year has all this silly crap in the rear view mirror. And I pray for everyone’s health.

Probably more simple and sensible to keep at risk people (the cast minority) quarantined than making the entire country (the vast majority) come to a stand still. JS.

That would make sense, but everyone is going back like it's going to be a normal year.
