ID Requirement to Vote

I can’t understand the argument against having to show an ID to vote. Anyone have a good reason or argument against the requirement?

You even have to have an ID for mundane task of getting a library card.  So, something a important as running the greatest country in the free world, one would think that voter ID is a no-brainer!  Like BS Wildcats said -- always look who opposes something!  The one can usually tell right from wrong!

It's largely left up to the states.

The idea is that if one didn't have to have an ID normally then it would basically be a "poll tax" and would keep the poor from voting.

But considering how an ID is necessary for just about everything now it's kinda bull if you ask me.

I understand what most of you are saying, but the question is “what is the argument”. So far, the only argument I’ve heard replied is that it is burdensome. Is that it?

In this day and age, yes.

At least that's all I can think of.

Pretty sure there are a few places, Chicago being the example I can recall, that non-citizens are allowed to vote if they are "living here and planning to stay."

But that was back in the late 70's or early 80's. I don't know if they're still doing that...

There ARE people out there who would like to see more requirements to be able to vote.  There is a segment of the population that believes that "uninformed" people should be discouraged from voting... much in the way that juries are picked.  Voter ID requirements are the simplest and most effective first step in weeding out the goofballs.  I've got the right/obligation to vote.  But what about my parents who are incoherent?  Should I intercept their ballots and vote "the way they'd want to?" Or what if the administrator at the nursing home intercepts their mail-in ballots and votes for a candidate that "looks like her?" Because trust me... my step-grandmother voted twice after she went to the nursing home with dementia.  We wouldn't have known if the local democratic party hadn't started soliciting her for donations.

There's a segment of the population that believes that there should be more barriers/prerequisites to vote.  The idea that every informed voter can have his/her vote canceled by someone who couldn't even pick either candidate out of a photo array is extremely annoying, and it's how we end up with crappy leaders.  The argument can be made that only tax payers (property, income, etc) should be allowed to vote.  It's widely accepted that the fall of the Roman Empire was largely accelerated by letting non-landowners vote. People who aren't going to be affected by higher property taxes or higher income taxes will almost always vote for tax increases.

If you ask me, we need to go back to voting like they do whenever we "give" those middle-easterners a taste of sweet democracy.  You go down to the polls on election day and they dye your thumb purple once you've voted. So much less trouble that way.

This guy hit it pretty much spot on.   If you ask me, we're right at the tail end.... "dependence" on the state is the condition of so many of our voters.

A democracy is always temporary in nature; it simply cannot exist as a permanent form of government. A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves generous gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy, which is always followed by a dictatorship.
The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been about 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; From spiritual faith to great courage; From courage to liberty; From liberty to abundance; From abundance to selfishness; From selfishness to complacency; From complacency to apathy; From apathy to dependence; From dependence back into bondage.

So is the country at the apathetic stage?

I think we're beyond that.  I think we're probably getting close to the dependence stage.  So many of our citizens rely on government for their very existence... Housing, food, medical, cell phone, etc.... The fact that so many of our young people are pushing for socialism (which is basically stating that our needs should be met by others) I think that we are getting perilously close to that dependent stage.  Mitt Romney got roasted for it, but over half of Americans don't even pay income taxes anymore.  If you aren't contributing but enjoying the rewards, you're dependent.

Great reply. I agree it is dangerously close to dependents. How do you foresee the final dissent back into bondage?

Personally?  I hate to sound like a tin-foil hat wearing conspiracy theorist, but I think we'll see the anger of the mob on the left harnessed by the powers that be into outright persecution and oppression of the minority on the right.  All you have to do is watch the lawlessness that's being permitted in major cities.  If rioters want to beat up your car or even beat the hell out of you, they'll get away with it.  But if you stand up for yourself and display a firearm in an effort to protect yourself and your property, you're headed to jail.  Every day you have old conservatives dying of old age and young socialists turning 18.  It's a seemingly inevitable tidal wave.  Once the opposition (the right) has been subdued, the far left liberal leadership will ascend to power and privilege and those who took up the socialist cause will be enslaved by their former leaders.  No guns, no right to speak, no property, no right to worship, and no jobs... just basically forced to live at the pleasure of the the ruling class.

It's textbook for what happened in every communist revolution that we've seen.  The leaders on the left said that everything must be torn down to be rebuilt "equally."  Except in reality the communist leaders were the only ones that prospered and the proletariat suffered.  Literally every single time.  Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, Romania (basically every eastern-bloc nation), Vietnam, Korea, China.... It happens over and over.  It's so comical that all of these kids have the entire world of knowledge in their hands, but they thing that socialism is the key and instead of looking at history to see how it really ends, they use their smart phones to see who military bases and statues are named after so that they can tear them down.

Literally... every conservative out there feels like their right to speak their opinions has been extinguished.  If you criticize BLM, you're probably going to lose your job. The next step is going to be re-indoctrination... where you renounce your beliefs and swear allegiance to "the cause" or face prosecution. It's happening before our eyes.   We'll have our own "crystal night" within a year if Biden wins, his radical VP takes over, and both houses of Congress go Democrat. It's already happening on a limited scale in major cities.

This is the hidden content, please

At least that's my opinion.

The only thing that stops the descent into bondage would possibly be a civil war..... if the right wins, things move onward, if the left wins, it's just bondage.  The only problem is that there are no guarantees that what happens if the right wins doesn't turn out to be outright fascism, either.

Thanks for the history lesson. Civil War II cannot be an option. Avoid it at all costs.

The whole voter ID thing is just a political football to be kicked around far as I can tell.  I worked in a dps driver license office for 18 or so years, until I retired the end of last May.  Your TDL or Texas ID is enough ID to vote, provided you are a registered voter.  Texas has stringent documentation requirements to get an DL or ID..  They have a special EC card or election card that they issue.
The same documentation is needed to get that card.  So, if you have the documentation to get the EC card you might as well get a Texas ID.   DL is a little harder cause you have to pass a written & driving test.

Every time there was an election coming up the supervisors would as for volunteers to come in on Saturday mornings and they would process the EC cards then.  The people who volunteered told me they seldom did anything because no one would show up.

All this was in the pre pandemic days.  Now it is very hard to get into a driver license office unless you have made an appointment in advance.

So are you saying that requiring an ID to vote should be no big deal? Because I agree.
