Central becomes District 22-4A volleyball contender after YMBL win

That's because a weekend break for the Young Men's Business League Tournament has revealed at least one more playoff contender - the Central Jaguars.

Central, 13-4 overall, travels to Lumberton for a 7:30 p.m. game coming off Saturday's YMBL title. The Jaguars knocked off Ozen 25-22, 18-25, 25-17 in the championship match.

"Ozen has been in the playoffs, so the players were real excited," said Central coach Angel Marsh of her team's YMBL title over its BISD rival. "The players feel like they are getting better.

"I like their attitude. They are not cocky. They are playing together and talking to each other."

Central setter Brandi Buckley was the YMBL most valuable player, while Katrina Harris, Clarissa Williams and LaQuetta Jackson were named to the all-tournament team. Marsh was honored as the tournament's top coach.

"I've had three or four seniors since the 10th grade, and they are coming together," Marsh said. "They are learning the game."

Soon enough, the Jaguars might have to learn how to deal with postseason pressure. Central, which hasn't made the playoffs in the last five years, is 1-1 in 22-4A. But the Jaguars are coming off a sweep of defending district champion Nederland last week. Central also scored victories over league rivals Little Cypress-Mauriceville, Lumberton and Ozen at the YMBL. LC-M beat Central in the 22-4A opener for both teams.

"It's always a tight district," Marsh said. "We're just going to take it one game at a time and try to get more district wins."
