PN-G rocks Lady Dogs

NEDERLAND — The Port Neches-Groves Lady Indians traveled to Nederland for a District 22-4A matchup in volleyball action on Tuesday night. It was the first time Nederland and PN-G got together in district play this season.

After coming off a district championship in 2006 and splitting the district with PN-G in 2005, the Lady Dogs were ready to continue their success.

Rock-A-Noos had other plans, however, and played the spoiler by putting away Nederland in four games.

Kayla Prasnicki led the way for PN-G with 16 digs, 13 points, and three blocks, helping the Indians get out to a 3-0 record in district play.

The Lady Indians came out strong in the first game, slamming their way to a 25-11 win. In that game, Rockanoos scored eight straight points, which helped them get out to an early 15-4 lead. The Lady Dogs never settled down in Game 1.

“I was really proud of the way played tonight,†Lady Indians coach Barbara Comeaux said. “We played hard and never gave up at any point in the match. The win puts us in a good shape for the start of district but this is just one game. There are a lot of good teams. We’re glad to get a win against Nederland. They are a great team with a lot of fight; but this is just one game, and we will have to play them again.â€

The Lady Dogs roared back in Game 2, scoring 10 of the first 14 points. The Indians cut the lead down to three points on two occasions, but Bulldog standouts Lindsey Rossi, who had nine kills on the night, Tayler Trojcak, who had eight kills, and Elizabeth Havard, who finished with seven kills, helped lead the way for Nederland’s 25-21 Game 2 victory.

Game 3 proved to be the difference for the match. While the game went back and forth most of the way, Nederland built a four point, 18-14 lead but the Lady Indians called a timeout and followed with a six point run that gave them a 20-18 lead. The Lady Dogs never reclaimed the lead and PN-G went on to win Game 3 by a score of 25-23.

“We finally started playing defense in that game,†Comeaux said. “That was the difference. We fought hard and didn’t give up and when we started playing defense, we turned the defensive play into some points.â€

Outside of Prasnicki, Chelsea Horn, Sami Jo Williams, Paige Miller and Brandi Guidry all had great nights for the Indians. Horn had 10 kills, Williams had four aces, and Guidry contributed with 16 assists.

After breaking Nederland’s spirit in Game 3, the Lady Indians finished off the Lady Dogs 25-18 in Game 4.

Nederland coach Toni Leach said she was really proud of her team.

“They played with a lot of heart and I am really proud of them,†she said. “We just made more mistakes than they did tonight. My girls really wanted to win this one and I think they pushed themselves to the point that we beat ourselves. They got frustrated in the last game the girls never gave up. We played with a lot of fight tonight and that’s all you can ask for.â€

Other Nederland standouts were Kaitlyn Sneed who had nine blocks, 21 digs and four kills on the night. Savanah Desmarais had eight points, nine digs, five kills and five blocks and Holly Pryor had 31 assists, four blocks and three digs.

With the loss, Nederland falls to 1-2 in district play.
