5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A???? Too much emphasis being placed on school classification?

Recommended Posts

When announcing the scores, making sure the size of the school is pre-determined before commenting always seems to be aimed as being a negative for the larger school. Either to take away from the thrill of victory or add to the agony of defeat. The simple fact is that a larger classification school has a greater chance (percentage) of assembling a larger number of better athletes and having superior athletes. This is not always the case. The simple fact is that there are 1A schools in this state that could beat 5A schools (believe it or not). When emphasis is placed on a game, it is usually because it is perceived to be or has been a very competitive game or having a very competitive history regardless of the size of the school. So after the outcome does not go in your favor, don't trump the conversation by throwing your classification card. It is a factor of the game that cannot be changed or argued and was well known going into the competition.

Get off  the soap box!!!  It's just a way of stating the classification with the schools.  If you are 3A you are 3A...  If you loose to 5A or 1A its still a lose.  A good team can beat a bad team... we all know this!!!  Boo Whoo stop whinning.  It doesn't even matter!  If you rae a larger school then win the game and it won't be negative.  You sound like a soccer MOM!

He's right, whats the point of putting the classification?  Its bragging if you're the smaller school that won, its an excuse for a smaller school that lost.

Its only to address all the "whining" that goes on when someone is handed a loss. I'm not saying don't state your class. I'm only saying don't use it as a crutch when you lose or a way to cut down your opponent when you win.

Every little brother wants to beat the big brother... I mean its even in the Bible, David vs. Goliath.  Its good for the small school win or loose to feel that they can compete with the big brother!  All big brothers beat up on lil brothers!! Whenthe lil brother finally wins one then big brother respects him...  Then big brother works harder not to lose to lil brother again...  It competition and its good!

Thanks, and its fine. Ned Dog edited me anyway. I had some real good stuff to say. ;D

It was directed solely to those who cop out on the classification thing when you get a leg up in an argument. Seen a lot of this lately. I understand school pride is a big thing. Losing isn't easy to accept, especially to rivals and in tight games. Bug to lose gracefully is the key, grasshopper! We may very well go on to be 2-8 this year and make the playoffs that way... Dat stinks!!

Forgive me Oilers, for I have blasphemed. Luv ya blue!! :'(

The ONLY way that scenario would work is if the 5A school played the same number of players the 1-A school played. Whereas the A school is going to have four, five, even six ways playing both ways the entire game, the pool of "good" players available to the AAAAA school is sufficient enough that hardly any one would have to play both sides of the ball. It would be just a matter of time, especially in the line, before the AAAAA school totally wore down the A guys. After midway through the third quarter, it would get ugly.

Alto has the athletes to hang with anyone in the state of Texas. They have extream athletes, that can run all night and never get tired. If you all are not really familiar with Alto, you just don't understand....

As far as Sterling vs Alto, let's remember too, that Sterling went 3-7 last year. and Alto was the state champion.

Also, there was an article earlier, in August, in the Baytown Sun that football turnouts at the two Baytown schools was at an all-time low - in other words, they couldn't remember when it was so bad that no one was coming out for football. They mentioned that where they used to have 170 out, now it was something like 70.

Can it happen? Yes, in fact as you've shown, it did. But apples to apples, oranges to oranges . . . well, how would alto have done against Baytown Lee last year, or Northshore, Pearland, or Deer Park? Much different outcome.
