Bridge City hopes to put past in the past, focus on Kelly

BRIDGE CITY — Bridge City coach Cris Stump had an easy message for the Cardinals this past Saturday after watching game film.

“Learn and burn†was his statement to his young Cardinals, who had just

been thumped 48-7 by the Lumberton Raiders.

“You learn from it and then you burn it,†Stump said on Wednesday. “We had a pretty good film session Saturday in no air conditioning. We have a lot to correct.â€

The Cardinals left the field in Lumberton having given up 497 yards of

offense, with 394 coming on the ground.

While the Raiders were chewing up yards, they were also doing a good job keeping the Cardinals offense at bay.

Bridge City (0-2) could only muster up 130 yards.

So that tape is burned and now the Cardinals turn their eyes toward tonight’s 7:30 kickoff against the Monsignor Beaumont Kelly Bulldogs at Larry B. Ward Stadium.

The two teams are far from new opponents as Bridge City holds a 7-5 mark against Kelly (3-0), with the two teams battling to a tie in 1996.

Kelly’s last win in the series came in 1997 when the Bulldogs blanked the Cardinals, 35-0.

Bridge City has outscored Kelly 267-218 in the 13 games, an average of 20.5-16.7.

“Kelly is a good football team,†Stump said. “Offensively they are a real good football team and will be a challenge for us to stop Lumberton was more physical and Kelly likes to speed things up a bit more. They certainly have the guys to do it.â€

One of the main guys for Kelly’s attack is quarterback Anthony Fazio who will miss this game due to a shoulder injury. Fazio passed for 112 yards and two touchdowns in last week’s 42-21 win over Houston Furr.

Junior Douglas Prewitt will be the starting quarterback for the Bulldogs tonight.

“It is just one tough game after the other,†Stump said. “We are going to have to play our best and eliminate our mistakes to even have a chance.â€

On the season, the Cardinals have averaged 247.5 yards a contest while giving up 441 yards to their opponents.

Quarterback Dustin Breaux leads the offense with 111 yards rushing and 280 yards passing and a total of four touchdowns. Sophomore Joe Robertson has 75 yards rushing on the season.

Breaux is coming off a sore knee from last week’s game.

“He is real close to being back to a 100 percent,†Stump said. “He strained a muscle above his knee. He is a tough kid and will not let this hold him out.â€

Kelly Coach Mike Long is not looking past Bridge City in any way, even after the Cardinals’ lop-sided loss to Lumberton.

“They (Cardinals) are a scrappy bunch and are well-coached,†Long said. “Bridge City is young and I certainly don’t mind (quarterback Johnny) Dishon being graduated. They are going to be tough and will be hungry for a win.

“Lumberton is a very good football team and we are not the Raiders. We are really going to have to play well to stay with the Cardinals.â€

Stump also reported backup quarterback Blake Hubbard will be out six weeks with a broken nose.

Not all injury news has been bad news lately in Bridge City as Kevin Buchanon is back and working into shape after having a hernia.

No matter who plays Long knows his team will still have to be focused come game time tonight.

“I am stressing no turnovers and playing hard,†Long said. “Offensively Bridge City spreads things out and it is hard to tackle when they get the ball into open space. We are teaching our kids to run to the football.â€

Come Saturday Stump hopes the Cardinals took what they learned and burned the Bulldogs.

I think that Bridge City might come out on top and they will win in a good fashion to me I think so the Cardinals.

if they run, Kelly can stop them..if they pass, thats another story........Fazio out...gonna be close

Fazio being out may level the playing field a bit.  BC defense is not playing too well right now.  Could see a shootout tonight even with a backup QB for Kelly.
