KFDM COOP Posted September 21, 2007 Report Posted September 21, 2007 Battered Sharks seek to regroupAREA ROUNDUPBy Larry Bodin The Port Arthur News SABINE PASS — After fighting off a loss to Galveston OÃConnell two weeks ago, then having last week’s game against Colmesneil cancelled due to the hurricane, Sabine Pass now has to deal with a rash of injuries going into tonightÃs game against Chester (0-1). And when youÃre a Class A school, injuries are your worst enemy because depth is your most precious commodity. The Sharks have now lost two key players for the rest of the year with injuries. Those two players — quarterback and safety Aaron Clark (broken hand), and two-way tackle Holden Ray — (broken foot) start at four separate positions.Another player who is a key offensive starter and does the Sharks’ placekicking was expected to miss at least two more weeks due to kidney stones. But, while senior tight end Cody Almond remains sidelined on offense tonight, he has been cleared to resume some of his kicking duties.Head coach Jason Thibodeaux’s depth also suffered another blow when backup linebacker Jacob DeFrancis (separated shoulder) went down Monday at practice (within an hour of Clark’s injury) and he too is out for the rest of the season.Asked in mid-week for a few comments about tonight’s opponent, Thibodeaux just shook his head and said, “Chester, we’re not worrying too much about them in terms of scouting and such.“I think we have enough to think about in terms of our own team. But don’t count us out because I know our kids will come out and play their hearts out.â€Replacing Clark at quarterback will be the alternating duo of junior Casey Hagen and freshman Hunter Cruthird. Subbign for Ray in the trenches will be sophomore Luke Peltier. “Our players’ character will be tested and hopefully we can hold on until district time,†said Thibodeaux.Chester comes in with an 0-1 record while the Sharks are 1-1.
