RIM TO RIM WITH LADY CARDINALS BASKETBALL

Natasha Ward

Oct. 3, 2007

LadyCardinals.com snared the tall, lanky 6'5 New Zealander and got her to share her thoughts on her new home, adjusting to the food, lifting weights, and learning the game of basketball - American style. Ward is an extremely coachable young lady and with her work ethic, will become a force in the Southland Conference in the years to come.

LC: What has been your biggest surprise concerning basketball since your arrival on the Lamar campus? NW: The pace and strength in the game is a lot higher than New Zealand basketball.

LC: Being a native of Auckland, New Zealand, an area which is known for its steak at nearly every meal, what has been your favorite American food and are you getting enough of it? NW: American pizza's not bad, but I'm still adjusting to food. Oreo biscuits are good though.

LC: Strength training is a big part of Lady Cardinals Basketball. How have you adjusted to "pumping iron" and developing "your guns"? NW: It's been hard, but I just keep pushing myself to my limit every day.

LC: Coach Tidwell has "nicknamed" you Kiwi, where does that nickname come from? NW: New Zealand has a native bird called Kiwi, so I guess some how the New Zealand nickname originated from there.

LC: What are your plans after your basketball career is finished? NW: Still not sure exactly. I'm hoping to take basketball to the professional level. I'd like to stay in the sports industry like athletic training.

LC: When you call home, what are the time differential and approximately how much does it cost per call? NW: New Zealand is 17 hours ahead. It costs about eight cents per minute on phone cards.

LC: What is your most prized possession and why? NW: A photo of my mom because she is my role model.

LC: There is a group of New Zealand student athletes on campus that run cross country, have you had a chance to befriend them and learn from their experiences? NW: It's really good to be able to relate to them with all the changes we have from home.

LC: Your roommate is Agnija Reke of Latvia, what have you learned about her culture in the past three months? NW: National colors are maroon and white and it used to be part of USSR. She speaks Latvian and Russian.

LC: Some girls are sensitive about their height and do not want to be over 6' tall, so are you 6'5" or 5'17"? NW: Stand tall is proud is what I live by. I have been lucky enough to be given height, so I choose to use it to my advantage.
