Versatile Doty is PN-G leader both on, off field

By Tom Halliburton

The Port Arthur News

PORT NECHES -- Undersized Brett Doty chasing those fast Panthers from Beaumont Ozen... wow, it appears to be somewhat of a rigged track meet.

It almost makes a veteran sportswriter lean toward picking against Port Neches-Groves in Friday night's 22-4A district opener at 7 p.m.

Yet when the Indians venture toward head coach Matt Burnett's old college stomping grounds, Beaumont's Lamar Cardinal Stadium, the purples may just own the smartest center fielder and defensive back in the entire league.

That's how intelligent that Ron and Carol Doty's 17-year-old senior has performed both on the football field and in the classroom.

When does PN-G ever seem to find its free safety out of position or in the wrong coverage? Not very often. Perhaps about as frequently as Brett comes out of his classes with any marks below an A.

"I made a B in keyboarding," said the National Honor student with a 3.98 grade average.

Well, Brett probably was keeping his eye on some beautiful Indianette rather than paying attention to the keyboard, if he made a B in that class.

The 5-11, 175-pound Doty takes after his mom and dad when it comes to his contribution on the Indians team. Brett can be found as a receiver on offense, as well as the signal caller for his secondary unit.

His father Ron is a busy Certified Public Accountant. His mother Carol works at Port Arthur's fire department and waits tables at Sartin's Restaurant. On Friday mornings in football season, the Indians can count on Carol to invite the team to the house for donuts.

"They're both real supportive," Doty said of his parents. "They've both been by me no matter what I've done."

In his spare time, Brett has a most unique player-to-coach relationship with the Indians' chief.

There's a bond between Burnett and Doty that definitely has been special. Matt can be high strung. Brett can be high strung. Matt coaches the secondary in his spare time, along with being the head coach. Brett coaches the secondary on the field... Sometimes Matt tries to calm down Brett. Sometimes Brett tries to calm down Matt.

Not every player has the opportunity to see his playing career so uniquely intertwined with that of his head coach. But Matt Burnett and Brett Doty feel they work pretty well in concert.

"We work together," Doty said. "We help each other. I love him. He gets his moods. He's a funny guy. You don't want to get on his bad side because he can get on you when he wants to. But he's a great coach and we work together real good."

Burnett and Doty communicate often during a game with hand signals. That's because Doty is calling the coverage signals for the secondary on every play. The job is for a smart athlete to be sure, because Brett must know which player goes where in each and every stunt or blitz.

"He has to orchestrate who's got whom," Burnett analyzed. "We work pretty good together. We both get pretty riled up. Sometimes I have to get him calmed down and sometimes he calms me down. But he's a great young man and I anticipate him being very successful."

That's in football as well as life. Doty had 11 tackles in the season opener against La Marque. The speedy La Marque passing game and its skilled quarterback Jairus Kerlegan seldom succeeded at getting behind Brett.

Doty won the extremely demanding chore of keeping La Marque in front of him. Very few free safety guys in the entire state could have done it any better.

Doty collected a fumble, an interception and six tackles in a 43-0 win at Silsbee, after missing a good portion of the Crosby game due to cramps. The Indians' trainers have made certain that Brett drinks enough water to keep himself properly hydrated after that hot night.

Part of the problem with keeping Brett hydrated simply is this. He never comes off the field enough. The hardest answer for Brett to give during this interview involved the matter of which platoon that he liked best -- offense or defense.

"That's a tough question," he said. "I've been playing more defense and I like to make tackles but I like catching balls, too."

When Doty finishes football, he hopes to become a doctor. He watched a heart surgeon perform a triple bypass during a field trip last year to Houston's M.D. Anderson Hospital. He hopes to begin pre-med studies next fall either at the University of Texas or Texas State University.

"I've wanted to become a doctor since I was little," he said. "The idea of helping someone is amazing."

Leading at PN-G -- on and off the field -- seems quite cut out for a winner like Brett.

Indian Inklings

Kenneth Tezeno was a domineering pass thief as a junior but it's a different story so far as a senior. Five different PN-G pass defenders (including Tezeno) share the team lead in interceptions with one apiece. The other four are Brett Doty, Tyler Gizzi, Benjamin Lancaster, and Drew Barnett.... PN-G's tackle chart credited five players with having a hand in "caused fumbles" against Silsbee. They were Clint Burnett, Randy Collida, Justin Pierson, Zeke Schexneider, and Chris Schexnider. The fumble recoveries at Silsbee belonged to Doty, Tezeno and Austin Miller.... That Silsbee score (43-0) marks the first shutout at PN-G for new defensive coordinator Carl Broussard, who has brought in an effective traditional McNeese-style defensive scheme after serving in the same capacity at Hamshire-Fannett.... Injury list at Silsbee added two key names. Senior offensive lineman Caleb Wallace sustained a knee sprain in the first half. Junior tight end Aaron Shetley broke a foot in the first quarter. The open week permitted a few other nagging injuries some valuable time. Junior Dillon Harrison likely will start at right guard for Wallace. Seniors Zeke Schexneider and Clint Burnett will take up the slack for Shetley at tight end.

He is a good example for some of the other youngsters to strive to be like.  Wish someone besides Halipukin would have written the article, though.
