AggiesAreWe Posted December 4, 2020 Report Posted December 4, 2020 Doesn't the whole team get punished when there is a holding call, offsides, personal foul, block in the back, etc.? Also, doesn't the whole team get punished when a player is found to be ineligible and the team has to forfeit games? exsoftballplayer, NetCat, bulldog81 and 2 others 5 Quote

No one knows the details of the first incident other than the article circulating that says the student was involved in a similar incident during soccer. That’s it. That’s all anyone has heard. No one knows the actual severity. If the first incident was as similar as the recent incident, I imagine the coach removed the kid from the soccer program and the kid served a suspension. I imagine the kid was put on a growth plan to help the kid grow and get a second chance. I would like to believe the coach has felt the kid, up until this point, has obeyed and shown growth since the first incident. It is very clear the kid did not value and has ruined his second chance. The coach approached the situation with the mindset that he would like to put the kid in a situation where he had an opportunity to learn from his first mistake. I know in today’s world people do not like to offer second chances, but I believe that is probably what happened in this situation. I have seen second chances work, where a kid returns to a program and becomes a model citizen. Which it seems a second chance is what this kid received. I have also seen students be kicked out of an extracurricular program and go down a path of crime, incarceration, or even death due to the lack of organization and discipline a sports program may offer. It’s a two way street. The coach gave the kid a second chance, the kid screwed it up. To me that’s the situation. Now I have a major problem if the second chance was warranted due to his major role on the team instead of the betterment of a kid. bulldog81 1 Quote

2wedge Posted December 4, 2020 Report Posted December 4, 2020 They knew this kid was a liability and had potential to pop off at any second. The key words in the article posted above are "best defensive player".....that's the only reason he was out there. Kinda like when Jimmy Johnson coined the phrase "Troy Aikman rules". Had this been a second string receiver, he would've never been in a uniform. The district is absolutely responsible for this happening and should be held accountable. One thing I will promise you, if the UIL comes down hard on the school and coach, you will see this behavior come to an immediate end across the state. Adults seem to be able to get this kind of stuff under control when their jobs are contingent on things other than wins and losses. The article indicates the team won the game and earned their first playoff birth in quite some time. The UIL needs to reverse the decision of the game, or immediately disqualify them from being able to participate in the playoffs. exsoftballplayer 1 Quote

Should the whole team be arrested? Just following your logic. When someone gets ejected for targeting, they don’t toss out the whole team. Cmon guys, there are steps and degrees of punishment. Depending on the circumstances, which none of us know completely, the appropriate penalties should be handed out. Maybe after the first incident, the coach made him seek counseling, punished him severely, who knows. Maybe the coach didn’t do anything and should be fired. Let’s see one of your co-workers show up late for work and they dock YOUR pay... kinda silly, huh. Quote

Now, do you feel bad for the rest of the team, of course you do, but one of your own caused this and the coach allowed it to happen by allowing the him to play. What's worse is it all could have been avoided if the coach that walked him off the field would have simply escorted him to the lockerroom immediately. SmashMouth 1 Quote

exsoftballplayer Posted December 4, 2020 Report Posted December 4, 2020 Good decision.....This kind of thing should NEVER happen, even if the referee IS wrong......that is just sportsmanship (which is not taught these days)...hope he got the message this sends.... Quote
2wedge Posted December 4, 2020 Report Posted December 4, 2020 Great decision by Edinburg ISD. They just set precedent and didn't want on the UIL to do it for them. I promise you, we won't see something like this happen again for a long time since everyone now knows how severe the punishments will be. Quote

LTFALCON Posted December 4, 2020 Report Posted December 4, 2020 I agree that once a player is ejected he should immediately been escorted off the field, off the sidelines and straight to the locker room. This could have been totally prevented and eliminated a TEAM being punished. PIS poor decision by both player and coaching staff for not making this happen. He deserves a criminal punishment as well. Officials should NOT be subject to violence NO MATTER the situation. Quote

If one of them gets in trouble, then nobody does anything bad for years... Quote

Like when that kid from Silsbee jacked that kid from Jasper? Remind me what they did for punishment. Can’t remember. Quote
