Dear 2020 Gilmer Buckeyes,
This letter is a tradition, started in 2004 and carried on with every State Championship Team since then. Before you head out on this last trip of the season, we want you to know that your Army of Buckeyes are behind you! You are the best of us. You are our sons, our brothers and our PRIDE. No matter what happens Friday, just know that we could not be more proud of you!
We have watched you use your motto to climb your mountain this season.  AWTHEED! All Ready. It is something you have lived week by week, day by day, practice by practice, and rep by rep.  Your willingness to trust it has gotten you through one of the toughest schedules in 4A football, a D1 “BIG SCHOOL” who is also playing this weekend for a State Championship, Pleasant Grove and a District Title… and now to where only 7 teams in 107 years of football in Gilmer have ever been, playing for a State Championship!  WOW!  What a journey.  What an accomplishment!
You have learned to trust the process that got you here.  To trust your coaches, the people around you who truly care about you, and most importantly to trust in each other.  You have seen what can happen when each one of you is willing to be selfless, and to SHOW UP and DO YOUR JOB every rep, every play, every day!  So when you walk into AT&T Stadium Friday morning, TRUST that what got you here is all you need to walk out as champions!
You know your opponent well.  Carthage is Carthage. They are our “Lion” to hunt… and our Goliath to slay. You will find that this will not be the last time in life when you have to find a way to be your best when it counts the most. But remember, when David stepped out to face Goliath, he trusted in what God had done to make him ALL READY for the task. God gave him lions and bears to face that were trying to steal his sheep… and David dealt with them and grew from the experience. Those tests helped him develop his skills with his sling and staff, as he spent countless hours in the field practicing... rep after rep. Sound familiar? Check the names on your Black Flag.  Right there are the names of the “Tests” God has given you to make you ALL READY for THIS! Eagles, Lions, Hawks, Bears… seen them all, beat them all. Tests taken; Tests passed. You are ready. ALL READY.
David also left behind all the things that a “normal warrior” would never be without. He took no armor. He took no sword or shield. He also left his emotions behind, he left all of his fear, his anxiety, and any thoughts that would distract him from his task. He only carried into battle what he knew he really needed; TRUST in God’s preparation, a sling, a staff, and five, smooth stones. Now ask yourself; why 5?
Was David planning to miss a lot?  Do you think he was nervous facing a man 5 times his size, laughing at him and screaming about ripping him apart? I BET HE WAS! But in that moment, David’s TRUST in what got him there was bigger than any other emotions he was feeling. Goliath’s armor, weapons, smack talk and “undefeated swagger” didn’t measure up to David’s TRUST that he was ALL READY.  He put his emotions aside, ignored where he was or who was watching, loaded his sling, locked in and TOOK HIS SHOT!
And all God needed was ONE STONE to change EVERYTHING!
So believe us when we say, GOD has prepared you for this moment in your life! You are bringing an ARMY to this fight and we are right behind you! LET US CARRY YOUR EMOTIONS, so you can be free to FILL THIS GAME WITH INTENSITY! All you have to do is FOCUS YOUR SKILLS and BE THE STONE!
Then we’ll see how big “Goliath’s” really is… big enough to fit on our Black Flag? Then we’ll see how good “Goliath” really is… good enough to BEAT OUR BEST? And we’ll see if “Goliath” can handle a storm of 60 stones for 48 minutes of ALL READY!

Sincerely,

Your ARMY of Buckeyes

With due respect, Gilmer is not a David. They are a big squad and Carthage is not Goliath. We are not in Judea and this is not a battle in the desert.

Carthage is like one of those all star high school teams put together by Deon Sanders or Michael Irving.

Not likely...Carthage would frown on the showboater and the other one with his drug use and vices in the past.

Say what you want...it’s a good analogy. And Carthage is definitely a Goliath in 4A.

No it's a terrible analogy. Both squads have more than adequate depth. Carthage is not a Goliath and Gilmer not small like David. Gilmer has one of the biggest squads in 4A D2 and that's a fact. Gilmer was defeated today and the best team won. Deservedly so.

Center is in the same district, so when I saw Carthage had drop down to Div. II after winning state in Div. I, I'm like "well hell, just go ahead and hand them the district and state title." Crazy good.

Center is not the small town it used to be. It's grown.

This is insane.  Like for real. It just makes me wonder why many teams haven’t followed the blueprint of Carthage yet.

Not everyone gets that caliber of player every year...and those players are coached by the best there is

Us getting our ass kicked has nothing to do with the post. It was about trying to inspire KIDS to do something that many knew was probably not going to happen. So peace if I pissed in your Post Tosties with the letter that a bunch of KIDS received.

Don’t sweat it. Treehugger is clueless. Too many paint chips.

This Dawg defense has to be one of the best all time in 4A football.
Gilmer had 124 yards and 14 points in the first Quarter.
They had zero points and minus -5 yards in the second quarter.
63 total yards and no points in the second half.
WOS the chain gang

Navasota in 2012

Dawgs 2017 and 2020

Daingerfield 1983 will never be touched

Pittsburgh 1980 is in second place

If anybody can name others, please do

Carthage would not beat Aledo....

I’m going to go ahead and say it, Carthage will give Aledo all they want. I have seen Aledo many times over the years. They usually play the same day we do or the day after us. I watch all the games at Jerry World. Carthage would be a top 5 team in 5a DII. Name 5 teams better. Don’t think you can do it. But that’s as far as Carthage goes. 5a DI is a different story. Start getting up there with Denton Ryan, HP, Longview, Manvel, etc. But I don’t want to hear about Aledo blowing out Carthage. Plenty of years Carthage can play with and beat them. This is one if those years. 2017 was one of those years. 5a DII is not a great division no matter what people want to think.

100% agreed.  But I have no hesitation in saying Carthage could go 3-4 rounds deep in 5A-DII.  If in Region 3, once they ran into teams that could play tough D like Huntsville, then they may get bounced.

Huntsville? Come’on man. Saw their best team in a while have to take Marshall to the last play of the game to get out of the 3rd round in 2018. Carthage beat Marshall much easier that same year. You guys are giving way too much credit to 5a DII. Crosby just beat the #5 team in that class. Is Crosby world beaters? Ennis who is the #1 team got beat in the 2nd round by an I ranked team. Carthage could win a state title in 5a DII this year. In 2020! There I said it. They don’t lose at Jerry World. If they made it, they would beat any team in that division.

Why would y’all want to see WO-S get beat by 40? That’s no fun.

I believe Carthage beats WO-S but not by 40, more like 28-14.  They're not 3 deep at every position like some folks but the ones they send out can scrap. Congrats to the Bulldogs on another title, great season, great team.  And for you spatula head, you talk like a man with a wooden neck, lay off the brake fluid. Enjoy the moment, try some humility or somebody might take you where the fart was left. Sounds like the Dogs gonna be a handful again next year, we'll see.

Your are correct, the Dawg D may be better. They return 3 D linemen, all 3 linebackers, state champ defensive Most valuable player at one corner and Branden Wade at the other. Add in D lineman number 80 that played in every game with the starters.
Did any one notice number 18 on the sidelines. 6ft 3 and 185 pound kid.
The QB position will be a highly contested position.
The JV and sophomore class have some very talented offensive linemen.
The Dawgs will be in the hunt again with a defense that may not allow 50 points the entire year.
