Lady Cards sweep past Lady Mustangs

WEST ORANGE — Nobody has put up much of a challenge against the Bridge City Lady Cardinals in the District 21-3A volleyball race.

Well, Tuesday night, the Lady Cardinals made the West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs their eighth straight victim in 21-3A play as Bridge City stayed perfect in loop play with a 25-12, 25-19, 25-15 sweep at Mustang Gym.

The win pushes the Lady Cardinals to 15-11 overall under the guidance of Coach Becca Mathews but more importantly, 8-0 in 21-3A play. Meanwhile, the Lady Mustangs are still seeking their first 21-3A victory under Coach Gwen Kelly-Hall, falling to 0-8.

The Lady Cardinals certainly spread the wealth out, putting three different players in double-digit kills.

Leading the way was senior hitter Audrey Myers, who pounded out 12 kills. She also had an excellent outing serving the ball, notching 13 points and a whopping seven aces with her jump serve.

Kayla Fullerton posted 11 kills to go along with five points and two aces. Lauren Angelle added a double-double, collecting 11 points and two aces to go along with 10 kills. Jenna Angelle garnered seven points and two aces while Emily Kosh added five points and three kills.

“Despite winning all three games, the kids never got into a groove and that concerned me a little,†Mathews said. “The match was played at a slow pace and we like to play faster than that. West Orange-Stark played hard and made us earn almost every point.â€

Miquendria Warnell and Kia Hartfield paced the Lady Mustang attack with four kills apiece while Ishaneka Gant had three kills. Marcquishola Solomon added three points and two kills. Warnell had five points and two aces and Cayla Adams added five points.

The Lady Mustangs kept Game One tight for awhile, trailing just 9-7. However, Myers and Fullerton teamed up for eight kills down the stretch to lead Bridge City on a 16-5 spurt to close it out.

WO-S’ biggest lead of the match came at 4-2 in Game Two. The Lady Cardinals, behind the powerful hitting of Lauren Angelle and the serves of Myers, quickly regained momentum to go up 14-10. Hartfield was able to notch back-to-back kills to get the Lady Mustangs as close as 19-17 before the Lady Cardinals went on a 6-2 run to close out Game Two.

Bridge City stayed in complete command of Game Three, jumping out to a 7-1 cushion. Fullerton, Myers and Lauren Angelle all had three kills apiece as Bridge City went up 18-8. The Lady Mustangs rallied back to 19-13 before the Lady Cardinals scored six of the match’s final eight points.

The Lady Cardinals are looking to bring their ‘A’ game to Cardinal Gym Friday when they play host to the second-place Silsbee Lady Tigers.

Bridge City downed the Lady Tigers in four games in Silsbee in the first half of 21-3A play.

“That’s going to be our toughest match of the season right there,†Mathews said. “Everything fell right for us at their place. All of our best players were on their game and Silsbee’s top players had an off night. We don’t expect that again. A lot is riding on this one. If we win, we’ll be two games up in district, if we fall, we’ll be in a tie with Silsbee. I think our kids will be ready to go. That’s a match you look forward to and that’s what it’s all about.â€

The Lady Mustangs will seek their first 21-3A win Friday when they pay the Kirbyville Lady Wildcats a visit.
