KFDM COOP Posted October 3, 2007 Report Posted October 3, 2007 Kountze, Hardin battle for first place in 24-2A volleyball A team's momentum is at an all-time high when they have an undefeated record. But at times, some teams lose sight of their goals after a few easy wins and become comfortable - maybe too comfortable. The Kountze volleyball team can't afford for this to happen - too much is at stake. Kountze and Hardin, which are both undefeated in District 24-2A, play at 6 p.m. today in Kountze to determine who will hold sole possession of first place."There's a lot at stake so we can't lose focus," said first-year Kountze coach Megan O'Quinn. "We never take anybody too lightly. We take it game by game and point by point."Hardin is 5-0 in district play, while Kountze is 4-0.So far, the Hornets have racked up wins against Deweyville (twice), Buna, East Chambers and Anahuac.Kountze (20-6) beat Anahuac, Deweyville, Buna and East Chambers to remain undefeated.Despite Warren moving to 23-2A, coaches decided not to reschedule games for this season. Each team in the six-team district has three byes among their round-robin schedule."We want to win the district title," said O'Quinn, who was West Hardin's freshman coach last year. "We know it won't be handed to us, so we have to stay focused. We have to continue to work hard in games and in practice. We must also play good defense if we want to achieve this goal."Kountze missed the Class 2A playoffs last season after a regional quarterfinal appearance in 2005. Hardin, Anahuac and East Chambers represented the district during last year's postseason.Hardin, which won the district title, made it to the regional quarterfinals before Lexington beat the Hornets in four games. Arp beat Anahuac in the second round, and Lexington beat East Chambers in the first."We hope to make a deep run in the playoffs," O'Quinn said. "But we still have games left to play in district, so we need to win those games first before we really start talking about the playoffs."The Lions return five starters from last year's team - middle blocker Kaila Johnson, outside hitter Maegan Stanford, setter Tachara McGrue, outside hitter Kayla Allen and middle blocker Lauren Deaver. Sophomore Angela Bloodsworth rounds out the starters for the Lions this season. "It's going to be a tough game against Hardin," O'Quinn said. "But we have the players on this team to beat them. We have to play good defense if we want to get the job done."
