Dawgs face must-win game in Orangefield

After last year's disappointing 28-21 loss to Kirbyville to open District 21-3A play, the Bulldogs came out and hosted the Orangefield Bobcats in the second game of the season.

Jasper laid a big egg in a 33-7 pasting by Orangefield over the Bulldogs in the Bone Yard.

Jasper Head Football Coach Thomas Brooks wants to remind his team of that as the Dawgs prepare for the Bobcats this week.

"Last year, players were quitting and leaving after the Orangefield game and I don't want to see that happen again," Brooks said. "I know we plan on reminding them about that game last year all week long."

This year, the Dawgs will be traveling to Orangefield to take on the Bobcats fresh off an opening district loss to Kirbyville 21-6.

Orangefield senior Jerrod Helton, 5-10, 180 starts at quarterback for the Bobcats. Helton played wide receiver last year for the Bobcats.

Other key players returning will be tight end Jeremy Granger, 6-2, 210, and running back Shea Mayo, 5-8, 165, who will assume the ball carrying duties for the Bobcats this year.

Brooks termed the Orangefield contest as a "must-win" contest for the young Bulldogs.

"We have to take care of this one first," Brooks said. "Our goal is to make the playoffs."

The Bobcats' numbers are down this year and Orangefield plays a lot of players on both sides of the ball.

"They come and they play hard and they play with a lot of pride," Brooks said. "We shouldn't expect to just walk in there, not play good and still win. We can't take a win for granted.

"We are talking about staying together as a team and working and winning the games we are supposed to win and play that last ballgame against Silsbee for something instead of just for pride.
