Guest abovetherim Posted October 7, 2007 Report Posted October 7, 2007 Lamar extends win steak to 10 games, remains perfect in SLC play Oct. 6, 2007 Box Score BEAUMONT - Senior Courtney Mitchell keyed a dominant offensive performance as the Lamar University volleyball team cruised past the McNeese State Cowgirls 3-0 Saturday afternoon at McDonald Gym. The Lady Cardinals improved to 14-7 on the season and 5-0 in Southland Conference with their 10 straight win. In addition to staying perfect in SLC play, the win boosts LU past their 2006 win total of 13. McNeese falls to 8-10 on the year and 2-3 in SLC play. The Lady Cardinals jumped out to an early lead in game one behind strong serving, which led to a 30-19 win. Lauren Rush served seven straight points to break the game open, staking LU to a 16-4 lead. The Lady Cardinals hit .317 for the game, while the Cowgirls hit just .022. In game two the Lady Cards continued to overpower McNeese, out hitting the Cowgirls .278 to .047. Lamar continued to serve strong, picking up five aces, while Destiny Mason led the offensive performance with five kills and a .571 hitting percentage. In game three the Lady Cardinals again jumped out to a large lead at 22-8 before the Cowgirls made a run to close the game to 26-18. Lamar broke the McNeese rally before they could get any closer than eight points, finishing the match with a 30-22 win. Mitchell led the way for the LU offense, knocking down 10 kills with a .500 hitting percentage, while posting a team-high five blocks. Mason also registered double digit kills with 10, while Adrianne Meengs passed out 34 assists. The Lady Cardinal defense was led by Andrea Hamilton and Kaci Brewer who had 16 and 13 digs respectively. As a team the Lady Cardinals out blocked McNeese 10 to six, while posting a hitting percentage of .230 to the Cowgirls .039. The Lady Cardinals also registered nine service aces, while McNeese totaled six. McNeese was led by Lindsay Brooks' nine kills, while Sarah Cartie passed out 26 assists. The Cowgirl defense was led by Jessica Strama's 17 digs, while Cartie and Brooks added 11 and 10 digs apiece.
