Family Affair: Charles Harper III

Charles Harper III is focused.  His dad is a successful coach, his older brother has earned a college scholarship and his younger sister is among the best players in Texas in her class. A local coach recently stated “Charlie Harper will be the biggest surprise in San Antonio this upcoming basketball seasonâ€. Charles Harper III is not surprised at that prediction because he has expects it to be true.

Ballboy: We recently attended a Rohawk basketball practice and saw you flying all over the court and dominating at the two guard position. . We were informed that you usually play the post.

CH3: I usually play the 3(wing) and 4(forward) for my high school and the 2(shooting guard) and the 3(wing) for the Rohawks. I can do whatever. I know my role and mainly rebound and hustle for my high school. 

BB: At 6’5 and 185 pounds, you have the idea body for a shooting guard. What position do you prefer?

CH3: I prefer to play the 2 or 3 since that is what I’ll play in college. I also have a 38 inch vertical leap and that helps me rebound. I am looking for an increased role this year because I have added new things to my game.

BB: You play for Madison High and your team reached the state semis last season. What was that experience like?

CH3: It was amazing. Playing in front of all those people really gets your adrenaline going. It was devastating that we lost but we felt playing at that level was big and we help us this year.

BB: Hoes does Madison look for the upcoming year without Notre Dame bound Carleton Scott?

CH3: We have a pretty solid team returning with most of us coming back. We know what it takes to get back to state and we are ready to do it again.

BB: What are some of your strengths?

CH3: My strength is going to the hole. I like to attack the basket. I also have a good midrange game. My dad taught me that it is important to have a midrange game. I am pretty automatic from 17 feet and in.

BB: What players do you admire or pattern your game after?

CH3: I pattern my game after my older brother. Lebron James is my favorite player because of his take over ability and he does not need to take a lot of shots to take over. He has mental tenacity and puts trust in his teammates. He is top 5 in the NBA and up there with Kobe and D Wade.

BB: Are you currently getting any college looks?

CH3: Yes, I’m getting a lot of them. Right now, Lamar, Army, Auburn, New Orleans, Hartford, SMU, Rice, TCU and UTSA are the main ones. I am still wide open and have not committed yet.

BB: When did you start playing the game and when did you start getting letters?

CH3: I started playing when I was 3 or 4 years old. I have always been in the gym. I started getting letters from the Kingwood Classic. That is when most of the Division 1 schools started contacting me.

BB: You moved to San Antonio from Virginia. How would you compare the two basketball environments?

CH3: Virginia has a lot more people that try to compete at the highest level. In Virginia, they play up encourage playing against the best at an early age. The competition is about the same in Virginia and Texas. Texas has some great basketball players.

BB: Who is the best player that you have played against?

CH3: Mike Singletary is the best. He is a 3-4 and was so big and strong that he could do whatever he wanted on the court.

BB: If you could trade places with anyone, who would you choose and why?

CH3: I would not trade places with anybody. The life I’m living is great. My family loves me and I have a great passion for what I do. My game is improving and I’m going to college. I love my life.

It sounds like Charles Harper III is focused on the important things and fully in charge of his destiny.

If the way he was punishing the rim at a recent Rohawk practice is any indication of what is to follow, the competition better start focusing on him.
