Deweyville's Dooley wins Liberty CC Meet

LIBERTY — LIBERTY — Deweyville’s Joe Dooley and his Pirate teammates have their eyes on the District 24-2A Cross Country Championships coming up and they certainly warmed up well for it Saturday at the Liberty Invitational.

Dooley chewed up the three-mile course in fine fashion, winning the Class 3A-and-Under Division with a time of 17 minutes, 15 seconds.

The Pirates captured third-place in the team standings with 84 points. Goodrich won the meet with 34 points and Kingwood Park was second with 58. Hardin-Jefferson (101) was fourth, Liberty (103) fifth and Kountze (108) sixth.

“Both our boys and girls ran really well,†said Pirate head coach Brad Haeggquist. “Both of them are on track for the District 24-2A Championships at Wildwood Country Club October 24th.â€

Dooley was followed by teammates Caleb Jackson (19th, 19:42), Caden Thompson (25th, 20:10), Brady Williams (26th, 20:17), Ronnie Anglin (28th, 20:20), Jacob Hopson (30th, 20:32) and Michael Chalambaga (36th, 22:02).

The Lady Pirates continued to improve on their times and placed sixth with 150 points. Kingwood Park won the meet with 34 points followed by Splendora (60) and Hardin-Jefferson (82).

Lady Pirate Amber Burks ran a personal-best time of 13:56 to place 13th over the two-mile course. She was followed by teammates Brittany Stevison (27th, 14:58), Marissa Powell (32nd, 15:12), Taylor Caswell (40th, 16:00) and Olivia Wilson (44th, 16:20).

The Bridge City cross country teams prepared for their District 21-3A Cross Country Championships, which will be held at Claiborne park Oct. 24 by participating in the Lufkin Invitational Saturday.

The Lady Cardinals placed second in the 3A-and-Under girls division. Mary Nguyen led the way, running the two-mile course in 13:52. She was followed by teammates Jessica Franklin (13:59), Ariel Chesson (14:30), Shae Garriga (14:31), Lisa Huynh (15:03), Melissa Pittman (15:18), Lan Vu (15:25), Kim Truong (17:24), and Sarah Fontenot (17:31).

The five varsity Cardinal boys ran in the 5A-4A Division. However, senior leader Ryan Kelly had to pull out of the race with an ankle injury. Tim Cude led the Cardinals with a time of 17:31 followed by Kirby Sheppard (17:45), Brandon Simoneaux (18:03) and Sawyer Hogan (18:42).

The Cardinals also had a team participate in the 3A-and-Under Division. Josh Blakeney led the way with an 18:37 followed by Armando Chavez (18:40), Mark Virva (19:10), Hunter Stevenson (19:13), Jacob Worthington (19:24) and Brian Godwin (21:33).
