10/15/2007 Chuck Mason, of Mason Construction, and his wife Becky have donated $303,000 to create an endowment that will establish Lamar University’s first privately funded Mirabeau Scholarship.

“Chuck and I were both very interested to hear about the Mirabeau scholarship fund,†said Becky Mason. “We think recruiting the top students is an outstanding idea.â€

“We are very pleased to be a part of this program and hope others will consider supporting it as well,†added Chuck Mason.

Mason serves as treasurer of the Lamar University Foundation. Strong supporters of the community, the couple is involved in several community activities and programs including the Rotary Club, the Jason Project, the Partnership of Southeast Texas and the Symphony of Southeast Texas.

Mason, who co-owns the heavy civil and industrial construction company that bears his name, left a tribute to the industry that has propelled the region for more than a century when his company built the replica of the derrick that brought in the Lucas Gusher in 1901 at the Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum on the university campus.

“Lamar’s Mirabeau Scholarship was created to help attract and retain the best students and enable them to afford a college education,†said Janice Trammell, executive director of the Lamar University Foundation. “Loyal alumni, like Chuck and Becky Mason, make a difference in the lives of students and endowed gifts like this one will continue to give in perpetuity.â€

The intent of the Mirabeau Scholarship is to provide a 4-year full scholarship to an academically gifted incoming freshman. To be considered, students must have achieved SAT scores of 1250 or greater or a composite ACT score of at least 28. Recipients must be persons of high moral character and be considered good citizens by their high school administrators.

To remain on the scholarship, students must maintain a minimum 3.5 GPA, full-time enrollment, and show active participation in academic, extracurricular, and service endeavors.

The Becky and Chuck Mason Mirabeau Scholarship will be awarded annually and is open to all majors.
