KFDM COOP Posted October 19, 2007 Report Posted October 19, 2007 Lamar State softballers close fall at UH tournamentThe Lamar State College-Port Arthur women's softball team completestheir fall exhibition schedule this Saturday with three games at theUniversity of Houston Fall Tournament.The Seahawks open at 1 p.m. against the host UH Lady Cougars, the2007 Conference USA champions, who went 44-18 in the spring to set a schoolrecord for wins in a season.Lamar State also will play UH-Victoria, a first-year program coachedby former Houston Astro Terry Puhl; and Region XIV rival San JacintoCollege, which was ranked just outside the Top 20 in the nation at the endof the 2007 season."These will be some of the toughest games of the fall, but we'relooking forward to them," said Lamar State head coach Vance Edwards.The Seahawks, 2-8-1 against college teams this fall, split a homedoubleheader with Louisiana State University-Eunice this past Friday.Lamar State was shut out, 0-10, in the opener, but came back to winthe nightcap, 8-4, with freshman Shauna Kelly of Nederland pitching acomplete game and recording nine strikeouts.Freshman shortstop Christina Jaques of Bridge City had three stolenbases against LSU-E to bring her fall total to 13. She also hit theSeahawks' first-ever inside the park home run and scored twice in the secondgame.Sophomore first baseman Kristen Botello of Nederland wenttwo-for-four at the plate and drove in two runs, while freshman outfielderCasey Nance of Evadale had two hits in three plate appearances and scoredtwice.Edwards is pleased with his team's performance."Regardless of the results, everyone got lots of playing time andthat will help us when we start the spring campaign at home on February 7against Temple College, which was ranked No. 14 in the nation at the end ofthe 2007 season."The Seahawks's first Region XIV competition will be March 2 at BlinnCollege in Brenham.
