BEAUMONT - The Lamar University volleyball team used a scrappy performance to overtake the Texas State Bobcats on Friday night, knocking out their Southland Conference West division foe 3-1 in front of a McDonald Gym in season-high 443 fans.

The Lady Cardinals improve to 8-0 in the SLC and 17-7 overall, while running their winning streak to 13 straight matches. The 13 straight wins in the most since the 1996 squad rattled off 13 straight, while the 8-0 start to conference play is the best since the 2001 opened with nine straight. Texas State falls to 5-3 in SLC play and 12-8 overall.

After dropping game one 30-22, the Lady Cards looked like they would not be able to slow down the Bobcat attack, as they fell behind 12-3. However, Lamar rallied back to tie the game at 17, behind the solid serving and timely blocking. The Lady Cardinals raced past Texas State down the stretch for a 30-27 to tie the game at one game apiece.

In game two the Bobcats again raced out to a large lead at 11-5, but LU would not allow the deficit to bury them. After chipping away at the Texas State lead the Lady Cards surged ahead 23-22 behind the strong serving of Ashley Todd who rattled off six straight service points.

The two teams battled back and forth for the reminder of game three, before a block by Molli Abel and Meagan Adams and a hitting error by Texas State's Emily Jones gave Lamar a 30-28 win.

In game three the Lady Cards did what Texas State was not able to do by finishing off the game after jumping out to a big lead. Lamar pulled away from a 10-10 tie to go ahead 22-14, and cruised to a 3019 win to close out the match. The final point of the match was scored when Lauren Holdorff blocked Emily Jones.

For the match the Lady Cardinals were led by setter Adrianne Meengs and outside hitter Kacey Brewer who both posted double-doubles. Meengs passed out 46 assists and knocked down 14 kills to go along with three blocks, while Brewer had 15 kills and 10 digs. Middle blocker Molli Abel also came up big for LU, knocking down 15 kills with a .414 hitting percentage, while libero Andrea Mitchell Led Lamar with 16 digs.

Texas State was led by Melinda Cave and Lawrencia Brown who had 16 and 15 kills respectively. The setting duties for the Bobcats was shred by Brittany Collins and Shelbi Irvin who each had 23 assists, while libero Kacey Wimpy led all players in the match with 26 digs.

The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Saturday, when they host SLC West foe Texas Arlington at 3 p.m. at McDonald Gym.
