KFDM COOP Posted October 23, 2007 Report Posted October 23, 2007 Southland Conference Media DayLance EdwardsOctober 22, 2007 - 6:13PM Del.icio.us | Digg | Print Story | E-Mail Story | Font Size Lamar Coaches Steve Roccaforte and Larry Tidwell believe they have basketball teams that should and will contend for a Southland Conference regular season title this year and apparently they're not the only ones that feel that way The preseason polls are out and the Lamar men have been picked to win the SLC East. The big red returns four starters and six players from last years squad the recruiting class coach roc and his staff did obviously improved the team at least in the eyes of the rest of the league The preseason polls in the SLC East has Lamar picked over defending regular season champs Northwestern State. McNeese State is picked third with Southeast Louisiana, Central Arkansas, and Nicholls State rounding out the bottom three Lamar also has some all-conference selections. Senior forward Lamar Sanders is a first team selection. Sanders was the SLC newcomer of the year last season averaging just under 13 points and 10 rebounds per game The second team has LU senior Darren Hopkins listed as one of the leagues best. 'D-hop' is Lamar’s returning scorer averaging 13.4 points per game last season. The Lamar Lady Cardinals have no seniors and a new head coach. They have the talent to put fear in the rest of the conference. The Lady Cards were picked first in the coaches’ poll, and they have last years freshman of the year Brittany Williams leading the way. Head Coach Larry Tidwell believes his team has excellent speed, good defensive pressure, and plenty of depth at positions. They've only been practicing officially for just over a week and the lady cards know they'll get better and better as the year moves along. The women’s preseason poll for the SLC East division has Lamar landing 13 first-place votes in the coaches and SID’s poll's, the most by any school in the league. The Lady Cards are looking to make their third straight appearance in the Southland Conference tournament. Coach Tidwell and his team don't just want to make an appearance, they want to win it all. Lamar's sophomore sensation Brittany Williams was the only freshman last year to receive all conference honors. The sophomore first team member now leads the youngest team in the league into 2007-2008 play. The first games begin in just two weeks. Tonight on KFDM Sports at 10, we’ll have some quotes from Southland Conference Media Day which was held in Houston on Monday.
