BRIDGE CITY — In what was basicaly a tuneup for the upcoming playoffs and a possible showdown against the Silsbee Lady Tigers, the Bridge City Lady Cardinals wrapped up the District 21-3A regular season by ditching the last-place West Orange-Stark Lady Mustangs 25-14, 25-10, 25-14 at Cardinal Gym.

The win pushes the Lady Cardinals to 20-13 overall but more importantly 13-1 in 21-3A play to remain in a tie with the Silsbee Lady Yigers for first-place.

The two teams will likely play a match Saturday to determine first and second-place playoff seeding. Bridge City coach Becca Mathews will meet with Silsbee coach Dana Thornton today to iron on the details. The two squads split in district play with BC winning at Silsbee and Silsbee winning at BC.

“It’s not 100 percent for sure that we’ll play,†said Mathews. “Our kids want to play and don’t want to flip for the district title. I think both teams would like to settle the district championship on the court. Plus, it’s a nice warmup-type of match before the playoffs start next week.â€

The Lady Cardinals had no problems overpowering a Lady Mustang squad that finished a rough 0-14 in 21-3A play.

The Lady Mustangs trailed 8-7 in Game One, but that was the biggest challenge theu posted the entire night.

Senior Lauren Angelle powered the Lady Cardinal attack with a whopping 17 kills. The Lady Cardinals notched 14 aces in the blowout win. Senior Audrey Myers paced the BC service game with 15 points and seven hard aces. Myers also found her way to 10 kills.

Kayla Fullerton had six kills for the Lady Cardinals while Sam West had a productive outing off the bench with six kills. Jenna Angelle posted nine points and two aces. Fullerton and Mallory Guidry each had eight points and two aces apiece while Lauren Angelle had five points and an ace.

The Lady Cardinals went on a 17-7 tear to wrap up Game One.

BC broke away from a 7-3 lead to as much as 20-5 to walk away with Game Two.

The Lady Cardinals then opened Game Three by scoring 13 of the first 16 points to easily notch the win.

Mathews, however, thought the Lady Cardinals would’ve played a little harder Tuesday night.

“I don’t think the kids brought the right intensity tonight,†Mathews said. “They got through it tonight but they have to realize that they can’t play in the playoffs like they did tonight. I think the next three days of practice will be pretty tough. They’ve got some tough matches ahead of them.â€

Kia Hartfield paced the Lady Mustangs with four points and three kills. Ishaneka Gant led WO-S with four kills while Marcquishola Solomon had two points and two kills.

Just a question--did BC & Sil. end as Co-district champs and the up coming game will just determine who will  represent in 1st and 2nd spots in the playoff bracketing?...or is that the District Championship game?
