This will be a hot topic the next several weeks and months.Who Would You Want As The Next LU Football Coach? Me personally i think we need a coach who is from the area and very familiar with SE Texas. This will be so important. Let's hear some names!!

Larry Newmann of Nederland would be a very good choice. Craig Stump as you mentioned RIM would be a great coach there as well.

Well, if Lamar is going to hire a High School coach we might as well hire Dan Hooks. He has a couple state championships and I believe he graduated from Lamar.

You are right, local is the key if hiring a HS guy. Ronnie Thompson coached both Dodge and Stump.

Guy Morriss at Baylor is probably going to get axed at the end of the season but he was very good at Kentucky.

Why are local kids the key to a successful Lamar football program?  How about the best kids Lamar can get, no matter where they are from.  Lamar needs to win, that's what will bring the fans.  Now if Lamar passes on the good local kids for other kids, that's a problem.  But they can't sign local kids just because they are from SETX.  As for as a head coach, they need to hire a hot-shot college assistant who's a great recruiter.  They type of coach can get the good local kids along with other talented kids.

Wesley Phillips

Wes Phillips joined the Dallas Cowboys in 2007 as the club's quality control/offensive assistant coach. Phillips comes to the NFL after coaching quarterbacks in the collegiate ranks for four years.

Before landing in Dallas, Phillips coached the quarterbacks in 2006 at Baylor under offensive coordinator Lee Hays. His work with quarterback Shawn Bell paid dividends as Bell threw for career-highs in attempts (383), completions (241), yards (2,582) and touchdowns (19) before his season was cut short with a season-ending knee injury. Despite missing the final three games of the 2006 campaign, Bell's passing numbers established school single-season records.

Prior to his one-year stint at Baylor, Phillips spent two seasons as the quarterbacks coach at West Texas A&M University under Hays. The Buffaloes celebrated their most successful season in almost 55 years in 2005, finishing 10-2 to post their first winning season since 1998, and the program's first 10-win season since 1950. WTAMU won the Lone Star Conference with an 8-1 record, its first league title since 1986 and advanced to the quarterfinals of the NCAA D-II Playoffs for the first time in school history.

Phillips was an assistant coach at WTAMU and helped the school lead the 2005 Division II ranks in passing offense, racking up 363.8 yards-per-game. He tutored quarterback Dalton Bell who was a finalist for the Harlon Hill Trophy, which goes to the top Division II player. Bell completed 68.5 percent of his passes for 3,799 yards and 30 touchdowns with 13 intereptions on 454 attempts. He finished third nationally in total offensive yards (349.2) and established school and conference single-season records for total offense (3,843) and passing yards (3,799).

Prior to joining the WTAMU staff, Phillips spent one season as a student assistant coach at his alma mater, UTEP, and played two seasons at quarterback for the San Diego Riptide of the af2.

A three-year letterwinner at UTEP (1999-2001), Phillips was a member of the 2000 Miners team that shared the WAC title, posted the school's highest win total in more than a decade and played in the Humanitarian Bowl. He still ranks among the school's single-season leaders in both pass efficiency (ninth � 120.0 in 2001) and completion percentage (eighth � 55.6 in 2001). Phillips received his degree in philosophy from UTEP in 2001.

I honestly hope this is all in fun and the powers that be already have someone they think they can bring to Beaumont, establish a program and win with. I hope they don't cut corners and spend the money it takes to get a good college coach.

I love our local coaches and I think they all could be successful college coaches. However LU needs a big name to land big recruits to win

early. LU will have huge fan support in the first 2-3 years. If the team is not winning after 3 seasons, it's over. So LU needs someone huge....

Lamar does not need to hire a high school coach to be their head coach. They need an experienced college coach to get the program off the ground. The new head coach can hire a few high school coaches as assistants to help in recruiting.

A good college assistant or maybe a head that's looking to get a fresh start somewhere would be the choice for Lamar.

My preference, R.C. Slocum, if you can get him off his ranch. I still think he's got the fire to coach again and he does have ties here. I do believe he would only be here for a short time, then hand over the program to one of his hand picked assistants, say a Craig Stump.

Pretty obvious the Aggie influence I have here. ;D

I think Switzer is the best and is within possible of getting him. He looked healthy and strong on tv the other day. I don't think

he has the fire, but a few young assistants will. Barry could coach for 3 years to get the program going and get the better recruits.

I totallly disagree - winniing is what brings support.  I agree that LU should look for local talent, but cannot let better players go so they can sign some local kid.
