Guest ECBucFan Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 Sorting through the numbers with Zachary Levine October 24, 2007Do we really need 4 playoff teams per 4A district? With news that coaches are considering going to four playoff teams from each 4A district, I wondered if this was a logical move or just too many teams. So to consider the football implications of this change, I went through last year's statewide standings in Dave Campbell's Texas Football magazine and the Web site TexasPrepXtra.com to find out what impact that setup would have had in the most recent completed season. Here are the stats on the 32 teams that finished fourth in their 4A football districts in 2006. These would have been playoff teams under the proposed new rules.Combined district record97-95Combined overall record155-164District recordsOver .500: 14At .500: 4Under .500: 14Overall recordsOver .500: 11At .500: 7Under .500: 14Please note that the overall records may be skewed by non-district games against schools from other size classifications. Before I give the full list for those who are interested, here's my question based on the numbers presented:Where do you stand on this? Is it necessary to ensure worthy teams get a shot or does it just provide recognition for coaches and teams who haven't earned it?I especially want to hear from the SuperDistrict 23-4A fans on this one.4A District/Team/District record/Overall record1. I went with head-to-head where applicable and point differential for the others. The district record wouldn't change, and the overall record, if it were different than the 155-164 would differ by at most a couple of games in either direction.Posted by Zachary Levine at 02:34 PM in High schools | Comments (8)

24 over par Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 4 teams in will make for some blow outs in the first round but every once in a while it will give a team with some early injuries or some other problem a chance to make a little play off noise, i say let them in
Guest maverick24 Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 In some districts such as 22-4A it would be good You have 8 teams and a good team will stay home! But in some other Districts teams will make it with a losing record. So I am not sure if it is a good thing!

Guest WeedBegone Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 Sounds kinda like no child left behind.
tvc184 Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 Sounds kinda like no child left behind.LOL, no team left behind.
tvc184 Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 The problem seems a lot to do with district size. I saw some districts with as few as five teams and then you have districts with nine. Three or even four teams making the playoffs in an eight or nine team district will usually produce good and qualified playoff teams. Try getting four teams from a district with five or six teams total and it will take one win to qualify for the playoffs.
Guest ECBucFan Posted October 25, 2007 Report Posted October 25, 2007 Yes TVC, even accounting for geography issues, seems the UIL could do a much better job evening up the districts. Eventually won't matter, though. Give it 10 years and EVERYONE will be a "playoff team" 10 more years and EVERYBODY will be "state champs" ....Pardon me, got to puke now.... :
