The Cardinals will also have another Red/White scrimmage Oct. 31 at 4 p.m.

Oct. 25, 2007

BEAUMONT - With the start of the 2007-08 season right around the corner, fans of Lamar University men's basketball team can get a preview when the Cardinals host the first of two Red/White scrimmages Saturday at 12 p.m. in the Montagne Center. The scrimmage is free and open to the general public.

The scrimmage will feature game-line conditions, including playing two 20 minute halves. Lamar will play a second Red/White scrimmage Oct. 31 at 4 p.m. at the Montagne Center.

Lamar was tabbed the team to beat in the East Division in the Southland Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, which was unveiled Monday at the SLC Basketball Media Day at the Merrell Center in Katy, the site of the SLC postseason tournament May 13-16, 2008.

The Cardinals had two players on preseason all-SLC teams. Senior forward Lamar Sanders was named to the first team and senior guard Darren Hopkins was selected to the second team.

A native of Hickory Flat, Miss., Sanders was a second-team all-SLC selection last year and was named SLC newcomer of the year. He averaged 12.2 ppg and led the SLC and ranked 12th in the NCAA in rebounding at 9.8 rpg. He also led the team with 103 assists and shot 59.3 percent from the field.

Hopkins, a native of Baltimore, Md., was an honorable mention all-SLC selection last year. He is the team's leading returning scorer after averaging 13.4 ppg a year ago. He shot a team-best 43.5 percent from three-point range and tied for second on the team with 27 steals.

Lamar returns four starters and six letterwinners from last year's 15-17 squad that advanced to the semifinals of the SLC Tournament for the third straight year. Those returning players accounted for 66 percent of the scoring and 59 percent of the rebounding from last year's team.

The Cardinals will play a pair of exhibition games before opening the regular season. Lamar will host Incarnate Word Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. and Central Oklahoma Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. The Cardinals open the regular season Nov. 13 when LeTourneau University visits the Montagne Center for a 7 p.m. game.

Season tickets for Lamar basketball are on sale now. There are three different packages available to fit any budget. For more information and to see what remaining seats are available, call the Montagne Center Ticket Office at (409) 880-1715.

Anyone going to the scrimmage? I have to work Saturday night.

I was there for the 1st half of the scrimmage.  I witnessed the following:

1.  The hustle of Ashton Hall....he looks to be shaking off the effects of the car injury.  He was all over the floor.

2.  The PG position is as good as LU has had since Attim Brown.  Mahoney did not play and I don't expect much out of him this year based on the play of McThay and Dawkins.

3.  Nwevo still needs to improve for LU to be a contender.

4.  Most athletic team LU has possibly ever had.

5.  Most hair a LU team has ever had.  Only 5 players with hair shorter than 3 inches.

6.  Impressed with Nabors, Brown, Worrell and Custer.

7.  CT still shoots too much and takes bad shots.

8.  LS was just being LS.

9.  DHop needs more open shots...he doesn't miss that much.

10.  Barrow is 100%!!!

That's good to hear Lazeek 8)

I was there the whole game but I can't give a better description than Lazeek did earlier. I'll do all in and say Dawkins is quicker and has a better shot than Atiim Browne did. Custer has came a long way. He guy looks really good and Jay Brown, well he can just flat of play.

Personally, the best thing to see was Ashton Hall and Matthew Barrow. I talked to Ashton after the game and the dude is cool off the court too.

Only one more week and til some hoop action takes place......I got excited watching those guys today.  I think that it is going to be a good season.  With the style that Roc likes and with the kids he has, they better do something better than FREE chicken when they hit a 100 points.

You're right on Lazeek. I think Barrow just had a off shooting day but you can tell the way he ran the courts and the explosiveness to showed. I think he is 100% back!!!

I think well hit 100 a few times this year because a lot of the teams we play like to run. I think we are in for some fun times again.

I hope you guys don't put too much into a scrimmage. I care about the athletic programs at Lamar but we as fan's need to see Lamar play a DI opponent before we hand them the SLC automatic bid.

Who anoited them with the SLC Automatic Bid?  We simply stated they looked improved, more physical, more athletic, etc.
