Kelly seeks to remain unbeaten

AREA ROUNDUP

The Port Arthur News

BEAUMONT — Kelly puts its undefeated season on the line here tonight when the 6-0 Bulldogs open district play against pass-happy Austin St. Michaels.

It is also St. Michael’s district opener, so the 5-2 Austin school should be sky-high going up against one of Texas’ best private schools in Kelly.

Kelly head coach Mike Long, whose team is coming off a bye week following one of its biggest wins ever in defeating Louisiana’s Class 5A Sulphur 31-7, said the Crusaders ?hrow it all over the place and have an quarterback in sophomore Mike McNamara that is really good.

Running the spread offense, McNamara has completed 100-of-161 passes for 1401 yards and 18 touchdowns. He’s also rushed for 176 yards and three scores.

Wide receiver Lanham Bass is McNamara’s primary target. With 10 touchdown receptions, Bass has caught 35 passes for 566 yards. Russell Fegley also has 22 grabs for 301 yards and four scores, and Steve Dunnigan has added 263 yards in receptions and three TDs.

“They are a finesse team and we’re going to get physical with them. That’s our game plan,†said Long. “The strength of their team is their offense, but we’re going to go after them all night long.â€

The Bulldogs are led by running backs Chance Filer (429 yards rushing, 5 TDs) and fully healed Donnie Carona (428 yards rushing, 3 TDs). Senior quarterback Anthony Fazio is 33-of-60 for 553 yards through the air, nine scores and just three interceptions.

His favorite target is Torreyjon Henry with 394 yards receiving and six scores.

Hull-Daisetta (4-3, 2-0) at Sabine Pass (1-4, 0-1)

SABINE PASS — Jason Thibodeaux’s Sabine Pass Sharks seek to halt a four-game losing streak here tonight when they host District 24-A leader Hull-Daisetta.

“They (the Bobcats) have a lot of fast kids and they try to get to the edge and make it a track meet,†said Thibodeaux.

Leading the Bobcats is last season’s Class A sprint champion Aaron Cook.

“Cook (Aaron) can really run and we hope to contain him. Since he’s the defending Class A 100 and 200 meters state champion, stopping him will a difficult task. We’re hoping to just keep him from getting to the outside.â€

Last week, the Sharks dropped a 37-0 decision to West Hardin, while H-D was knocking off Evadale 26-9 to remain unbeaten at 2-0 in league action.

“There hasn’t been a word among our players about next year. We’re still playing hard. We just need something good to happen to us,†Thibodeaux noted.
