Inauguration

What do the posters here think about President Trump skipping the inauguration of President-elect Biden?  Sore loser?  Do not care?  The election was stolen and President Trump should never recognize the Biden Presidency and Administration?  President Trump should man-up and attend?  Show some leadership and make a gesture to heal America?

The last time a President did not attend a successor’s inauguration was 1974 when President Nixon left the White House under the cloud of Watergate.  President Nixon did not attend the swearing-in of President Ford.  Before that, unless you count those that died in office, e.g., Presidents Kennedy, Roosevelt, Harding, McKinley, and Garfield, you have to go back to President Andrew Johnson skipping the inauguration of President Ulysses S. Grant in 1869.

Out of respect for the office and to uphold an example of decency, President Trump should attend.  Just my 0.02 cents.  After President Carter lost and he carried the burden of Americans held hostage in Iran along with the burden of a terrible economy that had divided our country, he attended the inauguration of President Reagan.  When President George H.W. Bush lost, he attended the inauguration of President Clinton.  Even after Bush v. Gore and hanging chads, President Clinton attended the inauguration of President George W. Bush.  President George W. Bush attended the swearing-in of President Obama and President Obama attended the inauguration of President Trump.  Even with many differences, those men did the decent thing and showed the world that Americans overcame divisions and peacefully transitioned power.  That we were still united through thick and thin.  Again, out of respect for the office, I think President Trump should reconsider.  What do you think?

In two different books, I read where Presidents Bush #41 and #43 left letters in the Oval Office welcoming Presidents Clinton and Obama and giving them words of encouragement and healing.  Those types of gestures to heal the divisions within the United States now seem long gone.  I hope we can return to the days where our days of unity outnumber our days of division.

I'm guessing a few responses will be: (1) the election was stolen, no need to attend; (2) attendance is not required under the Constitution; and, (3) Too little, too late...Pelosi started this mess...where were the olive branches of peace and unity when President Trump held the keys to the White House?  Perhaps not...maybe I'll be surprised.  Let's hear it.  Thanks.

Peace.

Trump is by far the bigliest sore loser in the history of U.S. presidents 4 years of blaming everything on everyone else - always the victim!

Not only is Trump the ultimate snowflake, he also got outsmarted and beat down by SLEEPY JOE. 😂😂😂

You bring absolutely nothing to the table with your regurgitated comments about Trump. What a broken record. I guess your comments have so little effect, they need continuous repetition.

I don’t think he’s welcome according to Biden. Probably for the best.

I, personally, would like to see him attend but I can understand if he doesn't.  I have been watching politics for a long time now but I have never seen the swamp treat anyone as badly as Trump has been treated, from both sides.  4 years of racist accusations, Russia collusion, impeach, impeach, impeach.  Members of Congress making up and pushing forward lies to get this man out of office, all the while, the media is complicit every step of the way.

Trump is rude and crude, without a doubt, but he has done many good things for this country.

I have no doubt that he will not attend, but that definitely won't be the least presidential action taken by a sitting President.

My thoughts are these... I was a little put off in 2009 when the crowds at the inauguration chanted "nah nah nah... goodbye!" at GWB.  It wasn't just classless, but also unnecessary as GWB didn't even run in 2008.  Nothing remarkable happened in 2012 when Obama won re-election, but there WERE substantial protests in 2016 (Jan of 2017) by lefties when Trump was sworn in.  That rotten behavior been escalating every time that a Republican is elected.  I would expect the Biden Inauguration to turn nastier than anything we've seen before in our history in light of recent events if Trump were to attend.  I also don't believe that's the reason why Trump isn't going.   He's just a sore loser.

I was encouraged by VP Pence's resolve to attend the Inauguration next week, and hopefully the occasion will be civil... That's what I honestly expect with the covid-reduced crowd sizes.

I hope it’s civil too. But our buddy Pence is going to attend to help out his career. Same reason he chose to be Trump’s VP. I doubt his moral compass is what’s steering him to go.

I think it's safe to say at this point that all of the good that he did is by far outweighed by the damage done by him across the board.

Four years ago the Rs held all three branches of government.  Today they hold none.  Any gains that he made will be wiped out as soon as they can by a partisan Congress.

Being rude and crude isn't something that should be ignored... and those behaviors were all to willingly accepted by Trump's supporters.

Not even close, tell that to the farmers that are getting good money for their corn and soybeans.

Tell that to the folks in fracking that were killing it and are now scrambling to secure leases on private lands.

Tell that to the millions of unborn that are hoping Roe v wade is revisited in the future.

Being rude and crude is ignored in Washington all the time, some folks just seem to focus on Trump.

You mean.. the SOCIALIST BAILOUT that big corporate farmers got while the little guy went bankrupt as the result of a failed trade war? Oh wait socialism and big spending is cool and accepted under (R), I forgot.

  • U.S. trade aid mainly benefited large farms in its latest round, undermining a key pledge by the Trump administration and leaving family producers at risk of collapse as the economy entered a recession.
  • Roughly two-thirds of payments went to the top 10% of recipients at the beginning of the year, according to an analysis of U.S. Department of Agriculture records obtained by CNBC through the Freedom of Information Act.
  • The top half of recipients collected 95% of total payments in the $28 billion Market Facilitation Program.

America spoke back in November and again on Tuesday... you and your friends still aren't listening.

None of the good that was accomplished in the last four years matters if the president was such a turd that four years later the Republicans have lost every bit of power in Washington and now all of that good will be erased with a few pen strokes.  That's what happens when good people say "well, I know he's rude and crude, but... " and you empowered him to behave in ways that led to the entire country being set back.  I know that it didn't bother you, but it bothered a lot of good people and now we're all screwed.  You should have voted for a candidate with some decency.

BTW... Roe v. Wade was almost 48 years ago.  Nothing is going to be revisited, and until the minority of y'all that falsely claim to care about the unborn shut up about it, Rs will always have trouble in general elections.  I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you haven't actually adopted any of those unwanted kids that were actually born.  Heck, I'd doubt that you've dug into your wallet and donated the funds to cover the first adoption, either.  What about just donating clothes to an orphanage?  Probably not that either.  Worry about your own decisions and leave others to make their own.  More and more of the voters in America were born AFTER abortion was legalized.  It literally sounds to them like calling for a return to Prohibition when they hear people raising hell about it.  It's legal.  It's been legal. It's always going to be legal.  Get over it.

Why don't you try talking to real farmers instead of googling your nonsense.  Renegotiating the trade deals in 2017 and 2018 was painful for farmers (they knew it would be) so the gov stepped in, as they should, in the interim.  You wouldn't want to deal with the year to year stress that farmers do, the myth that they are all rich is nonsense.

The left could card 2 cents about COVID and crowds.  Did you take notice of the crowds rioting throughout the past year?

I think it’s about time the “pro-life” term gets rephrased to “pro-birth” - because we all knows that’s what most republicans are really thinking. Not only do they not adopt or help out people in need, they actively campaign to make life as difficult as possible for the less fortunate by cutting the various social programs including food stamps, health insurance, etc..

This speaks volumes for you...get over the murder of innocents, wow.

As far as Roe V wade being revisited, you don't have a clue what you're talking about.

I'm sure glad you weren't making the call on slavery way back when, your response would have been, let it go, it's past history and is here to stay...Get over it!

Man, what a tired and stupid argument.
