Brown, Dawkins Lead Red Team Past White Team, 109-80

The Cardinals will play another Red/White scrimmage Wednesday at 4 p.m.

BEAUMONT - Newcomers Jay Brown and Kenny Dawkins each scored 28 points to lead the Red Team past the White Team in Lamar University's men's basketball scrimmage Saturday afternoon at the Montagne Center.

"I thought we looked pretty good today and we are a lot further ahead of schedule than we were last year at this time," said second-year coach Steve Roccaforte. "We need to tighten up the defense, but I like what I saw offensively. We are a much more athletic team this year."

Dawkins, a junior point guard from Holly Springs, Miss. (Arizona Western College), connected on 13-of-16 shots from the field, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, in scoring his 28 points. He also added seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Brown, a junior forward from Griffin, Ga. (L.A. City College), was 10-of-14 from the field, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range, and 5-of-6 from the free throw line for his 28 points. He also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out three assists.

Ashton Hall, a sophomore from Kountze (Angelina College), added 17 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field, including 2-of-5 from 3-point range. He had five rebounds and five assists. Justin Nabors, a junior from Holly Springs, Miss. (Northwest Mississippi CC) recorded a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

The Red Team shot 61.1 percent (44-of-72) from the field, 50 percent (9-of-18) from 3-point range and 80 percent (12-of-15) from the free throw line. They also outrebounded the White Team 41 to 30.

Lamar Sanders, a senior from Hickory Flat, Miss., led the White Team with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the field and narrowly missed a double-double with nine rebounds. Lawrence Nwevo, a junior from Lagos, Nigeria, added 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting from the field and also grabbed nine rebounds.

 

Currye Todd, a senior from Byhalia, Miss., added 15 points and Brandon McThay, a junior from Deerfield Beach, Fla. (Kilgore JC), added 12 points, four assists and four steals.

The White Team shot 45.9 percent (34-of-74) from the field, 22.2 percent (4-of-18) from 3-point range and 88.9 percent (8-of-9) from the free throw line.

The Cardinals will play another Red/White scrimmage Wednesday at 4 p.m. Lamar will play the first of two exhibition games next Saturday when Incarnate Word visits the Montagne Center for a 7 p.m. game.
