Ruling forces Hoover to forfeit wins due to ineligible player

Hoover High, which has won five of the past seven Alabama 6A football titles, will have to forfeit all of its wins that Tristan Purifoy played in and pay a $2,000 fine.

The Alabama High School Athletics Association told the school that it was in violation of recruiting and transfer rules regarding Purifoy, the team's leading wide receiver. Purifoy was found to have improperly participated at Hoover before he enrolled, and did not change his residency in a manner that met AHSAA rules

Purifoy, who transferred from Hanceville (Ala.) High, will also be ineligible for any athletic events at Hoover for one year and the Buccaneers were placed on probation for three years, said Hoover High principal Kenneth Jarnagin.

While the Buccaneers could still be eligible for the state high school football playoffs if they qualified despite the forfeits, any further violations could bring more sanctions. "We are trying our best to adhere to all state rules and make sure our program is run clean," Jarnagin said.

"We will meet with our athletic department to make sure everyone has complete clarity on the rules and that we will have zero tolerance."

Last week, assistant principal Carol Martin was transferred to an academic consultant position with the school. That followed a 68-page report by a retired federal judge that brought to light earlier AHSAA infractions by Hoover, incidents where athletes' grades were changed and other irregularities where athletes were given academic advantages not afforded other students, such as multiple retests.

Hoover, 6-1 this season, was ranked No. 1 in last year's preseason USA TODAY Super 25 rankings
