Cardinal Crazy Posted October 28, 2007 Report Posted October 28, 2007 Lamar improves SLC record to 11-1, tied for conference lead Oct. 27, 2007 Box Score NACOGDOCHES, Texas - All good things come to an end, and Stephen F. Austin's 62-match win streak came to a crashing halt Saturday night as the Lamar University volleyball team used a furious rally to win 3-2 at Johnson Coliseum in Nacogdoches, Texas. Down two games and trailing 20-14 in game three, the Lady Cardinals appeared as if they would be swept away as the Ladyjacks' 63rd straight victim, but Lamar would not be put away. The Lady Cards rallied to close the gap to three points, and four straight service aces by Ashley Todd gave LU their first lead of the game at 24-23. Lamar never trailed again, winning 30-27. "Ashley Todd turned the match around with her four straight service aces," head coach Justin Gibert said. "We wrestled control of the match away from them at that point, and shifted all the momentum to our side with those aces." The Lady Cardinals used the momentum from the game three rally to their advantage in game four, as they outworked SFA for a late game push to win 30-25. The win knotted up the match at two games apiece and forced a deciding game five. In game five the Lady Cardinals rushed out to an early four point lead, and never turned off the afterburners as they closed out the Ladyjacks 15-11. As the final point was hammered down by Kaci Brewer, nearly 200 LU fans stormed the court and celebrated at the net. "Our fans were essential in pulling us back from a 2-0 deficit," Gibert said. "They amount of energy they gave to us tonight was huge. I don't know if we could have pulled out such an important victory without them." The Ladyjacks opened up a two game lead with strong offensive play, hitting .364 and .327 in games one and two, but the SFA hitting percentage started a steady decline, dropping to .196 in game three, .143 in game four and .096 in game five. The Lady Cards on the other hand remained solid throughout the match, as LU finished with .234 to SFA's .227. The Lady Cards had several players register solid numbers in the match, led by setter Adrianne Meengs' triple double, as the sophomore passed out 54 assists, knocked down 13 kills and picked up 14 digs. Kaci Brewer finished the night in the 20-20 club with 20 kills and 24 digs, while Destiny Mason joined her with a double-double, knocking down 14 kills with a match-high 27 digs. Also coming up big for Lamar was Meagan Adams, who knocked down 12 kills and led all hitters with a .400 hitting percentage. Molli Abel capped off the Lady Cardinals players with double digit kills knocking down 12. Libero Andrea Hamilton finished with 17 digs for Lamar. "Our top players performed at a championship level tonight, but Meagan Adams was the nail in the coffin," Gibert said. "After game three she really turned it on and gave one of the best offensive performances of her career in games four and five. She was the difference down the stretch." The win improves Lamar's record to 11-1 in SLC play and 20-8 overall, while SFA falls to 11-1 in conference and 21-7 overall. The 20 wins is the first 20-win season of Gibert's career. The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Friday night at McDonald Gym when they host the Sugar Bears of Central Arkansas at 7:00 http://lamarcardinals.cstv.com/sports/w-volley/recaps/102807aaa.html
