Lady Cards Volleyball Overpowers UCA 3-0

BEAUMONT - The Lamar University volleyball used a dominant offensive performance and a strong team-defensive effort to overwhelm the Sugar Bears of the University of Central Arkansas 3-0 at McDonald Gym.

With the win the Lady Cards improve to 21-8 on the year and 12-1 in Southland Conference play. It is their 17th win in their last 18 matches. Central Arkansas drops to 7-6 in conference play and 21-9 overall with the loss.

The Lady Cardinals started the match on fire offensively, jumping out to an early five point lead a 10-5, and never looked back. The Sugar Bears closed to within three points at 13-10, but the solid serving of Lamar, who had five service aces in the game, gave the Lady Cards the boost to pull away for a 30-18 win.

In game two the Lady Cardinals again started out strong, racing out to a 13-point lead at 19-6 lead, and cruised to a 30-20 win. Lamar again served strong in game two, posting six service aces, while picking up just one service error.

In game three the Lady Cardinals used a dominant performance by middle blockers Shalayne Blythe, Molli Abel and Courtney Mitchell who combined for 12 kills and a .672 hitting percentage. Blythe lead the way with six kills and a .667 hitting percentage while Abel and Mitchell each added three kills. Abel posted a .750 hitting percentage and Mitchell hit .600, as Lamar closed out the match 30-20.

For the match the Lady Cards were led by Kaci Brewer's 11 kills while Destiny Mason added eight kills and 10 digs. Adrianne Meengs had a strong overall performance, passing out 38 assists, knocking down eight kills, picking up seven digs and serving five aces. Andrea Hamilton led the way for the LU defense, scooping up 16 digs.   

The Sugar Bears did not have any hitters register double-digit kills, as Chloe Smith led the way with nine. Robyn Smith passed out 27 assists for UCA and Kelly Bence led the defense with 10 digs.

The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Saturday when they host Northwestern State at 1 p.m. at McDonald Gym.
