KFDM COOP
Channelview tops Lee, 23-8By Michael PinedaBaytown Sun Published November 3, 2007Some game films should just be burned. In a game with playoff implications, Lee came out flat and paid for it in a 23-8 loss to Channelview at Stallworth Stadium Friday night. Channelview scored on its first play from scrimmage and dominated the defensive line of scrimmage to drop Lee to 4-5 on the year and 3-3 in district. Channelview along with Kingwood will also enter the final week of the season with a 3-3 district record to set up a photo finish for a playoff spot.“As crazy as it sounds, we are still in it,†Lee head coach Dick Olin said. “I’ve been here a long time and I have never seen a Lee team not play with enthusiasm and we didn’t. They wanted to win in the first half and we didn’t.â€The Gander defense gave up 255 yards of total offense in the first half alone allowing the Falcons to score all of their points. It could have been much worse as the Lee kickoff return team fumbled the ball the first three times it hit the field. Two offside penalties against Channelview prevented the game from getting out of hand.Lee opened the game in a one back set with a tight end. Putting Kevin Craft in motion the Ganders kept the ball on the ground and advanced to the Channelview 48 where they were forced to punt. The Falcons took over possession at the 20 and scored one play later when Zack Loudd hauled in a deep pass from quarterback Garrett Beal and shrugged off a tackle for an 80-yard touchdown. The extra point by Johnathan Acuna made the score 7-0.Lee traded punts with Channelview and faced a 3rd and two at its own 29. Junior quarterback Tim Jirrels, making his first varsity start was stripped on an attempted handoff and Falcon linebacker Henry Long recovered at returned the ball to the Channelview 12.“That’s ridiculous,†Olin said of the failed handoff. “There is no way that should happen. We went to the tight end set and tried to run but they just dominated us up front.â€The Lee defense held Channelview to a field goal but gave up two touchdowns in the second quarter. The first touchdown was set up by a 56-yard pass from Beal to Loudd. The Falcons converted a 4th and 12 at the 20 on a diving catch by Jackie Hinton to move the ball down to the six. Two plays later, Hinton ran it in from six yards out. Lee blocked the kick to leave the score at 16-0. The Ganders went three and out to set up the last Channelview touchdown of the half. The Falcons converted three third downs on the drive and scored on a Beal sneak up the middle.“When you can run a quarterback sneak for six yards, what does that tell you?†Olin said about the first half defensive struggles.Lee turned the corner in the second half only giving up three first downs but the offense was unable to take advantage of great field position. Jirrels kept his poise despite the constant Channelview pressure and did not make any bad mistakes but the Falcon pressure kept Lee from getting any rhythm. The Ganders had a chance to score at the beginning of the third quarter when Jirrels found Malcolm Murray open down the sideline for what would have been a touchdown but the senior was unable to make the play.On Lee’s second possession, they were forced to give the ball up at the Falcon 17, when a Kevin Craft scramble came up a yard short. Luna fumbled at the Channelview 35 when a Falcon stripped the ball as soon as he took a handoff and a drive to the Falcon 25 stalled when Cameron Bridgewater sacked Craft. The Ganders finally got on the board with 7:40 remaining when Juan Arroyo recovered a blocked punt at the 14. Jirrels found Goode in the end zone on 4th and 10 to put the Ganders on the board and a two-point conversion pass to Craft made the score 23-8. Trenton Warren picked off Beal on the next possession but Lee turned the ball back over when Jirrel was picked off trying to make a play late in the game.Jirrel was 3 of 16 for 57 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Goode caught four passes for 79 yards and Luna led Lee in rushing with 70 yards on 12 rushes. Lee will travel to Atascocita (3-6, 1-5) next Friday for a 7:30 kickoff.
