BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's basketball team opened the 2007-08 season Saturday afternoon, falling to the All Stars 66-62 in an exhibition game at the Montagne Center.

The Lady Cardinals started the game strong, jumping out to an early 11-6 lead. Tamara Abalde led the way in the opening five minutes of play with seven points.

Lamar continued their solid play for the remainder of the first half, shooting 60 percent from the floor, including a 6-11 performance from behind the three point arc. The Lady Cards also used a strong defensive effort in the first half, holding the All Stars to a 40.7 shooting percentage to take a 39-30 lead into the locker room

Emily Spickler led the way for the Lady Cards in the opening 20 minutes, scoring 11 points on 4-5 shooting, including three 3-pointers. Abalde tallied nine points on four of six shooting.

In the second half the Lady Cardinals could not find the offense that led them in the first half, as they struggled to a 25 percent shooting percentage from the floor. Lamar could not find their three point touch, hitting just one of their 11 attempts from deep.

The All Stars on the other hand used a steady offensive performance to slowly chip away at the LU lead, eventually taking their first lead since the first half at the 10:04 mark of the second half on a layup by Chelsea Greer.

The two teams then battled back and forth for the final 10 minutes of play, but Lamar could never take the lead as the All Stars answered ever LU run with a run of their own.

The Lady Cards tied the game a 58-58 with 2:31 to play, but a three pointer by Marquetta Cunningham gave the All Stars the lead for good with 1:25 to play. The All Stars capped the game off with five seconds to play, as Tasha Phillips knocked down a pair of free throws to put them up 66-62.

For the game the Lady Cardinals were led by Abalde's 17 points and six rebounds, while junior point guard Ashley Crawford added 13 points. Nikki Williams and Spickler each finished the game with 11 points.

The All Stars were led by Cunningham's 14 points and Jana Rediger's 13 points. Monique Blake had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds and Dickens chipped in with 10 points.

As a team the Lady Cardinals shot 41.5 percent from the field and 31.8 from behind the three point arc, while the All Stars shot 43.6 from the field and 45.5 from deep. The All Stars won the rebounding battle with a 40 to 31 advantage over LU.

The Lady Cardinals will be in action again on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when they take on the Houston Jaguars at the Montagne Center.

This team will be much better in Jan., Feb, and March. There is some talent. They just need to play together and REBOUND!
