TICKETSMARTER WAC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK ANNOUNCED
Sam Houston's Eric Schmid, Tarleton's Greg Eggleston Jr. and Sam Houston's Seth Morgan have been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, for September 20 through September 26.
 
Schmid, a redshirt junior quarterback from The Woodlands, Texas, went into Conway, Ark. and helped the Bearkats open up WAC/ASUN Challenge play with a 45-35 win at nationally-ranked Central Arkansas. The Preseason WAC Offensive Player of the Year was 19-of-37 on his pass attempts for 283 yards and four touchdowns, which all came in the first half. He also added 48 yards on the ground on 10 rushes, including a long of 19 yards.
 
Eggleston, a freshman defensive back from San Antonio, picked of a pair of passes in just his third collegiate game as the Texans earned a 40-21 win over New Mexico Highlands. His first pick came on the first play of NMHU's second drive of the game, picking off a 22-yard attempt. On the Cowboys' final drive, he gathered his second interception, putting together a 12-yard return to allow Tarleton to kneel down to end the game. He also added four tackles in the winning effort. 
 
Morgan, a freshman from Houston, earns his second WAC Special Teams Player of the Week honor after going 3-for-3 on field goals and 4-for-4 on extra points in a 45-35 win over nationally-ranked Central Arkansas. Now a perfect 17-for-17 on extra points and 4-for-4 on field goals, his scores against UCA came from twice from 22 yards and once from 32 yards. 
 
Other offensive nominees: Abilene Christian's Stone Earle completed 13-of-18 pass attempts for 185 yards and three touchdowns as the Wildcats earned the 56-0 road win at Lamar … Stephen F. Austin's Korbyn White led the 'Jacks with 71 yards rushing, scoring on a nine-yard rush early in the game in a 61-13 win over Lincoln (Calif.) … Tarleton's Daniel Wright Jr. rushed for a season-high 142 yards and two touchdowns in a 40-21 win over New Mexico Highlands. 
 
Other defensive nominees: Abilene Christian's Jordan Paup added five more tackles, including a tackle for loss and fumble recovery, to his season totals in 56-0 non-conference win at Lamar … Stephen F. Austin's Rayshad Nichols recorded seven tackles, including three tackles for loss and a pair of sacks, in the Lumberjacks 61-13 win over Lincoln (Calif.).
 
Other special teams nominees: Stephen F. Austin's Lenard Lemons had a 67-yard punt return for a touchdown and added 23 yards on kick returns in a 61-13 win over Lincoln (Calif.) … Tarleton's Dray Roberson gave the home fans some excitement early in the second quarter with a 100-yard kickoff return for a score to put the Texans up 30-7 over New Mexico Highlands.
 
KICKING OFF
It's a big week around the WAC and not only because it's time for the Battle of the Piney Woods between top-ranked Sam Houston and Stephen F. Austin at NRG Stadium in Houston. Dixie State returns after the bye week as they travel to South Dakota State, who is ranked second in the Stats Perform Top 25 and third in the AFCA Coaches' Top 25. Tarleton will head to Eastern Kentucky while Abilene Christian hosts Central Arkansas in AQ7 action. Both EKU and UCA are among those receiving votes in both the Stats Perform and AFCA polls.
 
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
As a team, Sam Houston leads the WAC in scoring offense (46.3), total offense (533.0), rushing offense (259.0), rushing defense (77.33), third down conversions (.500) and sacks against (3). Stephen F. Austin also leads the league in a number of categories, holding the top spot in total defense (266.5), socring defense (16.0), defensive pass efficiency (86.2), passing offense (287.0), field goals made (9), net yards per punt (52.5), punt return average (22.1), punt return TDs (3), interceptions (8), turnover margin (+1.3), fourth-down conversions (.571), sacks by (14) and time of possession (31:42). Abilene Christian is the leader in touchdowns scored (22), total offense/play (7.13), total offense TDs (19), pass efficiency (162.5), yards per rush (6.43), pass completion percentage (.676), pass defense (140.5), passing TDs (11), PAT kicks made (20), kickoff return yardage (42.5), opponents third-down conversion (.280). Tarleton is tops in total offense yards (450.8), rushing TDs (9), rush attempts (151), rushing yards (208.8), kick return TDs (1), first downs (95), first downs rushing (44) and red zone defense (.727). Lamar has the top red zone offense (100.0).
 
Individually, SHSU's Ramon Jefferson is the leader in rushing (133.3) and scoring/touchdowns (8.00) while teammate Eric Schmid is the leader in total offnese (288.0) and passing/game (267.0). SFA's Chris Campos is the leader in total scoring (11.25) and scoring/kick (11.25). ACU's Stone Earle holds the top pass efficiency among starters (172.88). SFA's Xavier Gipson continues to be the top receiver at 112.33 yards per game and is also the leader in all purpose yards (139.33). His 'Jacks teammate Max Quick leads the WAC in punting average (48.27) while Campos' nine field goals made is a WAC-best. On defense, Dixie State's Tyrell Grayson leads the league with 12.33 tackles per game. SFA's James Sylvester has the lead in sacks/game (1.25) while SHSU's Markel Perry is tied with SFA's BJ Scarlett for the lead in tackles for loss/game (2.00). SFA's BJ Thompson and Tarleton's Ronnell Wilson are tied for the lead in fumbles forced (2) while Tarleton's Devin Hafford is the leader in fumbles recovered (2). SHSU's Jaylen Thomas and SFA's Myles Brooks are tied for the lead in interceptions with three each.
 
NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED
Sam Houston remains the top team in the two major FCS polls, ranking first in both the Stats Perform Top 25 and AFCA Coaches' Top 25. The Bearkats are also second in the College Sports Madness Top 25 and fourth in the Athlon Sports Top 25. Stephen F. Austin is among those receiving votes in both the STATS and AFCA polls.
 
BATTLE OF THE PINEY WOODS
In a rivalry dating back to 1923, the Battle of the Piney Woods will take place this Saturday between Stephen F. Austin and Sam Houston at NRG Stadium in Houston. Sam Houston has won the last nine meetings and holds a 57-35-2 advantage over the rival 'Jacks.

TICKETSMARTER WAC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK ANNOUNCED
Sam Houston's Keegan Shoemaker and Jahari Kay and Stephen F. Austin's Max Quick have been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, for September 27 through October 3.
 
Shoemaker, a sophomore quarterback from Prosper, Texas, made his first start as a Bearkat in one of the biggest games of the year, leading top-ranked Sam Houston to a 21-20 come-from-behind win over rival Stephen F. Austin in the Battle of the Piney Woods at NRG Stadium in Houston. On the day, he was 16-for-29 passing for 222.0 yards, finishing with two touchdowns and a 135.3 efficiency rating. He also rushed the ball seven times for seven total yards. 
 
Kay, a senior defensive lineman from Berkely, Calif., led the Bearkat defense to a 21-20 win over rival Stephen F. Austin in the Battle of the Piney Woods at NRG Stadium in Houston. Establishing his place in the SFA backfield all day, he finished with 1.5 sacks and a pair of quarterback hurries while also forcing a fumble late in the game. He finished with eight tackles, including six solo stops.
 
Quick, a junior punter from Lufkin, Texas, notched five punts for 266 yards in the 'Jacks upset bid against rival Sam Houston. Averaging 53.2 yards per punt, he kept the Bearkats deep in their own territory much of the game, placing one punt inside the 20 and recording a booming 74-yard punt as well. He currently leads the WAC in punting average a 49.8 yards per kick.
 
Other offensive nominees: Stephen F. Austin's Xavier Gipson nearly led the 'Jacks to an upset win over rival Sam Houston, recording nine catches for an even 100 yards receiving and a touchdown … Tarleton's Tariq Bitson led the Texans in receiving for the third straight game, bringing in three catches for 66 years in a 20-3 loss at Eastern Kentucky.
 
Other defensive nominees: Stephen F. Austin's Amad Murray posted four tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss, and recovered a fumble as the 'Jacks battled rival Sam Houston in the Battle of the Piney Woods in Houston … Tarleton's Devin Hafford earned his third interception and fifth takeaway of the year in the Texans' 20-3 loss at Eastern Kentucky.
 
Other special teams nominees: Sam Houston's Matt McRobert averaged 50.6 yards per punt while placing two punts within the 20 yard line and forcing one fair catch in the top-ranked Bearkats' 21-20 win over rival Stephen F. Austin … Tarleton's Jake Walrath boomed a 61-yard punt to pin EKU within their on 10-yard-line and finished with eight kicks for 367 yards in the Texans' loss to the Colonels.
 
KICKING OFF
For the first time this season, the WAC has two top-25 teams as top-ranked Sam Houston plays host to Lamar while 23rd-ranked Stephen F. Austin heads to 24th-ranked Jacksonville State. Dixie State will have yet another nationally-ranked opponent, traveling to sixth-ranked Montana while Abilene Christian, who is receiving votes in the latest AFCA Top 25, makes the trip to Eastern Kentucky.
 
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
As a team, Sam Houston leads the WAC in scoring offense (40.0), total offense (472.0), rushing offense (211.0), rushing defense (82.0), third-down conversions (43.86) and are tied for the lead with Lamar for field goal percentage (100.0). Stephen F. Austin is the leader in total defense (271.0), scoring defense (17.0), pass defense efficiency (96.3), passing offense (272.6), passing defense (167.4), total passing yards (1363), field goals made (11), punt average (41.3), punt return average (22.1), interceptions (9), turnover margin (+1.2), sacks by (15) and time of possession (31:28).  Abilene Christian has the top spot in touchdowns scored (25), total offense yards (2074), pass efficiency (158.5), total rushing yards (993), pass completion percentage (.674), passing touchdowns (13). Tarleton is tied with ACU for the lead in rushing touchdowns (9) and also holds the lead in kick returns touchdowns (1), first downs (105) and red zone defense (.750).
 
Individually, SHSU's Ramon Jefferson is the leader in rushing (115.25) and teammate Eric Schmid is the leader in total offnese (288.0) and passing average (267.0). SFA kicker Chris Campos is tops in scoring (10.6) and teammate Xavier Gipson holds the lead in receiving yards per game (109.25) and all-purpose yards (130.25). ACU quarterback Stone Earle has the lead in pass efficiency (167.11). SFA's Max Quick has the top punting average (49.81) and teammate Campos is the leader in total field goals (11). Lamar kicker Bailey Giffen and SHSU kicker Seth Morgan are tied for field goal percentage (100.0). 
 
On defense, DSU's Tyrell Grayson is the leader in tackles (11.25) and the SFA trio of Edward Bobino, BJ Thompson and BJ Scarlett are tied for the lead in sacks/game (1.00) while Thompson is also the leader in fumbles forced (2). SHSU's Markel Perry is the leader in tackles for loss/game (2.25) and Tarleton's Devin Hafford has the lead in fumbles recovered (2). SHSU's Jaylen Thomas, SFA's Myles Brooks and TAR's Hafford are all tied for the lead in interceptions with three each.
 
BEST IN THE COUNTRY

TICKETSMARTER WAC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK ANNOUNCED
Sam Houston's Noah Smith, Dixie State's Tyrell Grayson and Stephen F. Austin's Chris Campos have been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, for October 4 through October 10.
 
Smith, a sophomore running back from Cypress, Texas, posted his first career 100-yard rushing game in the Bearkats' 41-7 win over Lamar on Saturday afternoon. His biggest run came midway through the third quarter, taking the ball 49 yards for a score to put the 'Kats up 26-7. In addition to his 14 rushes, Smith also caught one pass for five yards to give him 124 all-purpose yards in the winning effort.
 
Grayson, a redshirt freshman defensive back from Fresno, Calif., helped the Trailblazer defense stay tight with sixth-ranked Montana. His first-quarter strip sack helped Dixie State keep the Griz off the scoreboard for most of the first half, heading into the break down 3-0. On the day, he finished with 14 tackles to go with two tackles for loss and a forced fumble. He recorded double-digit tackles for the third time in five starts this season. 
 
Campos, a redshirt freshman kicker from Nacogdoches, Texas, did his best to keep the 'Jacks in Saturday's bout at Jacksonville State, finishing with a 30-yard field goal and three extra-points made in a 28-24 loss. On the season, he is a perfect 23-for-23 on extra points and an impressive 12-of-15 on field goal attempts with a long of 49 yards. His 59 points scored is nearly double anyone in the WAC this season.
 
Other offensive nominees: Stephen F. Austin's Trae Self posted his second 300-yard passing game of the season in a close 28-24 loss at Jacksonville State, going 26-for-47 for 305 yards with two touchdowns against the nationally-ranked Gamecocks. 
 
Other defensive nominees: Sam Houston's Markel Perry helped hold Lamar to just 23 yards rushing in the first half, finishing with five tackles and three tackles for loss, including a sack, in the 'Kats 41-7 win … Stephen F. Austin's Rayshad Nichols posted six tackles and had 1.5 sacks in a 28-24 loss at nationally-ranked Jacksonville State.
 
Other special teams nominees: Abilene Christian's Logan Burke punted the ball five times, averaging 48.6 yards per kick with a long of 56 yards … Lamar's Bailey Giffen averaged 42.4 yards per punt on seven attempts, placing two within the 20 and forcing two fair catches.
 
KICKING OFF
It's a light week with just two games on the schedule but both games will count in the WAC standings as Lamar travels to Abilene Christian for a 3 p.m. CT kick while Tarleton travels to Dixie State for a 7 p.m. MT kick. Both games will be broadcast on ESPN+.
 
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

Stephen F. ACU's Stone Earle has the top pass efficiency rating (152.90) and Dixie State's Jalen Powell is the leader in receptions per game (7.50). SFA's Xavier Gipson is the leader in both receiving yards per game (104.20) and all purpose yards (127.0). 
 
Defensively, DSU's Tyrell Grayson leads the league in tackles per game (11.80) while SFA duo Edward Bobino and BJ Scarlett share the lead for sacks per game (1.00). SHSU's Markel Perry is the leader in tackles for loss per game (2.40). SFA's BJ Thompson is the leader in fumbles forces (2) while TAR's Devin Hafford, ACU's Jordan Paup and SFA's Myles Heard are tied for the lead in fumbles recovered (2). SHSU's Jaylen Thomas, TAR's Hafford and SFA's Myles Brooks share the lead in interceptions with three each.

TICKETSMARTER WAC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK ANNOUNCED
Tarleton's J.F. Thomas, Abilene Christian's Hunter Kier and Tarleton's Adrian Guzman have been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, for October 11 through October 17.
 
Thomas, a senior wide receiver from Dallas, scored on the Texans' first drive of the game, bringing in two catches for 64 yards including a 30-yard touchdown, to set the pace in Tarleton's 41-20 win at Dixie State. He finished the contest with six catches for 169 yards to record his first 100-yard receiving game in over two years. On the season, he ranks fifth in the WAC in receiving yards at 57.0 per game and he is one of 13 receivers across the league with multiple touchdowns this season.
 
Kier, a redshirt senior linebacker from Washington, Kan., was a presence on defense all game long, finishing with 10 tackles in the Wildcats' 24-17 win over Lamar on Saturday. Of those double-digit tackles, two were behind the line of scrimmage for a cumulative loss of 12 yards. On the season, the linebacker is fourth in the WAC in total tackles with 41.0, averaging 5.9 per game.
 
Guzman, a freshman kicker from Temple, Texas, made a pair of 37-yard field goals and was a perfect 5-for-5 on extra points in the Texans' 41-20 win at Dixie State on Saturday night. The two made field goals give him seven on the season, ranking second in the WAC this season. He is also 22-of-23 on extra points for the 3-3 Texans.
 
Other offensive nominees: Abilene Christian's Peyton Mansell was 10-of-18 passing for 135 yards and also added 106 yards and two touchdowns on 18 rushing attempts in ACU's 24-17 win over Lamar … Dixie State's Drew Kannely-Robles finished with a career-high 81 yards on 20 carries with two touchdowns in a 41-20 loss to Tarleton … Lamar's Mike Chandler made his first career start and nearly led the Cardinals to a win at Abilene Christian, going 9-for-17 with 206 passing yards and a touchdown in a 24-17 loss to the Wildcats.

The top-ranked Bearkats will play host to Jacksonville State in a crucial AQ7 matchup while the 'Jacks head to Utah to take on Dixie State in a WAC game. TICKETSMARTER WAC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK ANNOUNCED
Stephen F. Austin's Xavier Gipson, Tarleton's Devin Hafford and SFA's Chris Campos have been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, for October 18 through October 24.
 
Gipson, a sophomore wide receiver from Dallas, brought in nine catches for 218 yards and a pair of touchdowns as the 'Jacks earned a 37-20 win at Dixie State on Saturday night. The top receiving mark in the WAC this season by nearly 50 yards, he leads the league this season with 121.5 yards per game, including six touchdowns.
 
Hafford, a senior defensive back from Atascocita, Texas, added two more interceptions to his season total to lead the Texans' defense to a 17-14 win over Midwestern State on Saturday night. His second interception sealed the game with just three seconds remaining. His eight takeaways on the season, which includes six interceptions and two fumbles recovered, lead both FCS and FBS this season. 
 
Campos, a redshirt freshman kicker from Nacogdoches, Texas, was perfect on seven kicks, going 3-for-3 on field goals and 4-for-4 on extra points in a 37-20 win over Dixie State. Totaling 13 points on the day, he hit field goals from 40, 43 and a career-high and stadium-record 53 yards to go along with four extra points. On the season, he is leading the WAC with 10.3 points per game with 15 field goals and 27-of-27 extra points.
 
Other offensive nominees: Dixie State's Drew Kannely-Robles put up a career-high 183 yards on 24 carries with a 47-yard touchdown run as the Trailblazers lost a WAC battle to Stephen F. Austin, 37-20 … Lamar's Jalen Dummett rushed the ball 15 times for 125 yards and one touchdown as the Cardinals battled Central Arkansas in an AQ7 battle before falling, 49-38 … Sam Houston's Ramon Jefferson recorded his fourth 100-yard rushing game of the season, carrying the ball 14 times for 110 yards and two touchdowns in a 42-7 win over Jacksonville State … Tarleton's Max Maxfield scored twice on three total catches as the Texans held off former LSC hoe Midwestern State, 17-14.
 
Other defensive nominees: Dixie State's Syrus Webster collected four solo tackles and two tackles-for-loss in the Trailblazers' 37-20 loss to Stephen F. Dixie State will kick things off on Saturday, taking on its seventh opponent of the season that is receving votes in the Top 25 polls when the Trailblazers kick off at Delaware at 1 p.m. ET. Lamar travels to AQ7-foe and nationally-ranked Eastern Kentucky, kicking at 2 p.m. ET. Abilene Christian heads east to Stephen F. Austin for a WAC/AQ7/purple battle. TICKETSMARTER WAC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK ANNOUNCED
Stephen F. Austin's Trae Self, SFA's Jeremiah Walker and Abilene Christian's Blair Zepeda have been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, for October 25 through October 31.
 
Self, a senior quarterback from North Richland Hills, Texas, completed over 80-percent of his passes, racking up 346 yards on 32-of-39 attempts for five touchdowns to lead the 'Jacks to a 41-27 win over visiting Abilene Christian on Saturday. Posting a 198.9 pass efficiency, he was also efficient on the ground, running the ball nine times for 42 yards. On the season, he leads WAC quarterbacks in passing yards, averaging 264.9 per game, and his 17 touchdowns in the air rank second in the league this season.
 
Walker, a sophomore cornerback from Houston, had two crucial interceptions and picked up a sack as the 'Jacks earned an important 41-27 win over Abilene Christian. One of the leaders on a defense that is allowing a WAC-low 181.0 passing yards per game, he has three picks on the season and averages 3.4 tackles per game. 
 
Zepeda, a redshirt sophomore kicker from Richardson, Texas, hit a career-high 52-yard field goal and was three-for-three on extra points in the Wildcats' loss at Stephen F. Austin. He also made a 41-yard field goal and has now made six field goals on the year in addition to a perfect 29-for-29 on extra points. 
 
Other offensive nominees: Abilene Christian's Davion Johnson totaled 152 all-purpose yards as the Wildcats dropped a conference contest at Stephen F. Austin, 41-27 … Dixie State's Kobe Tracy nearly led the Trailblazers to a win at Delaware, throwing for 314 yards on 25-of-39 passing in a 17-10 loss to the Blue Hens … Sam Houston's Eric Schmid threw for 301 yards and accounted for six total touchdowns, including five passing and one running, in a 45-27 win at Tarleton … Tarleton's Steven Duncan posted a career-high 403 yards passing with four touchdowns in the Texans' 45-27 loss to top-ranked Sam Houston.

Austin hosts nationally-ranked Eastern Kentucky in a pivitol AQ7 matchup beginning at 4 p.m. CT with Lamar and Tarleton wrapping things up with WAC action beginning at 6 p.m. CT in Stephenville. TICKETSMARTER WAC FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK ANNOUNCED
Stephen F. Austin's Xavier Gipson, Tarleton's Devin Sterling and Sam Houston's Jaylen Thomas have been named TicketSmarter Western Athletic Conference Offensive, Defensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, for November 1 through November 7.
 
Gipson, a junior wide receiver from Dallas, turned in three touchdowns on just four catches in Saturday's 31-17 win over nationally-ranked Eastern Kentucky. Those four catches totaled 138 yards as he is second in the FCS in receiving yards per game and third in total reception yards. He also leads the WAC in six offensive categories, including receiving touchdowns.
 
Sterling, a freshman linebacker from Sunnyvale, Texas, had a breakout game for the Texans, finishing with a career-high eight tackles, including 1.5 tackles-for-loss, in Saturday's 42-21 win over Lamar. Previous to Saturday's game, he had just one total tackle in 11 games played.
 
Thomas, a senior defensive back from Houston, provided one of the biggest plays of the day in the top-ranked Bearkats' 59-10 win over Dixie State when he gathered up a blocked field goal and raced it 64-yards to the house to give Sam Houston the early 21-0 lead. It was his second touchdown of the year as he returned an interception for a score in a week two win over Southeast Missouri.
 
Other offensive nominees: Abilene Christian's Kobe Clark moved into third all-time on ACU's career receptions list, bringing in six catches for 143 yards with a score in a 40-25 loss at Jacksonville State … Tarleton's Steven Duncan completed 21-of-32 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns as the Texans doubled-up Lamar, 42-21.

INDIANAPOLIS - The Sam Houston Bearkats knew they were in the field. Stephen F. Austin had to sweat it out. In the end, both teams heard their names called during the FCS Selection Show on Sunday morning.

The Bearkats, winners of 21 straight, earned the top-overall seed in the 24-team tournament. Sam Houston, who won the delayed 2020 FCS title in May, earned one of eight first-round byes.

Waiting for Sam Houston will be the winner of current WAC member Stephen F. Austin and future WAC member Incarnate Word. The Lumberjacks and Cardinals will meet on Saturday at Tom and Gayle Benson Stadium in San Antonio.

Games through the national semifinals will be played on campus sites at the higher seed. The 2021 FCS National Championship game is scheduled for Jan. 8, 2022 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
