I stopped by a busy gas station this morning and happened to be in line behind a few coaches who were chatting.Ā  I wasn't paying much attention until I heard something that made my ears perk up.Ā  I heard one say to the other "Will it ever end?".Ā  The other said, "Will what ever end? Of what do you speak?"

"Why, the success of West Orange Stark's JV squad, of course.Ā  Will it ever end?" Replied the coach.Ā Ā

"Ahh, silly me. Well of course not.Ā  They have the greatest JV coaches in all of the land and even more than that they practice on sacred, blessed land. It will NEVER end." the fellow coach responded.Ā Ā

I could do nothing but smile and shake my head.Ā  Powerlifter was right.Ā  Coaches across the state are asking.Ā Ā Ā

funny that you say this... last deer season I was at a gas station near my deer lease outside Jefferson.Ā  There were some old men sitting at tables talking about two things: the weather, and West Orange Stark's JV football program.Ā  It's not just coaches taking notice ;)

    • I get it!!Ā Ā I was once in your shoes. I was that person in the stands, loudly complaining about ā€œbad officiating.ā€ Now, with the rise of social media, itā€™s easier than ever to voice these criticisms online.Ā Ā I thought I could see every call better than the officials on the floor. Then someone said to me, ā€œIf you can do better, get in the game.ā€ Ā  That challenge changed my life. Over 20 years ago, I became a basketball official, and what Iā€™ve learned since then is eye-opening. Ā  Officiating is not just about making calls. Itā€™s about managing the game, the players, the coaches, and yes, the fans. We face a new generation of student-athletes who have been raised in a culture where everyone gets a trophy and losing is almost taboo. We deal with fans who question our integrity and sometimes become outright hostile. Ā  I acknowledge that officials arenā€™t perfect; we have off days just like anyone else. However, the increasing hostility from fans is driving many to leave officiating. According to the National Federation of High School Associations, approximately 50,000 high school officials have left the profession since the 2018-19 season, with fan behavior being a significant factor.Ā  Ā  Hereā€™s the reality: without officials, there is no game. Ā  So, instead of tearing down the people who make your games possible, hereā€™s a suggestion: Ā  ā€¢ Thank the officials for being part of the game. ā€¢ Thank them for the countless hours they spend studying rules, mastering mechanics, and working to improve. ā€¢ Thank them for their patience with privilege-minded athletes and overly aggressive fans. Ā  Next time you see an official, instead of criticizing, take a moment to say, ā€œThank you.ā€ Theyā€™re out there to make the game happen, and trust me, itā€™s not as easy as it looks from the stands. Ā  If you think you can do better, take the challenge like I did. Get in the game. You might just discover how much it takes to blow that whistle.
