Final Week HS Football "Nuggets" of Interest...

AWESOME OFFENSES

The state's scoring leaders entering the final week of the regular season are:

489 (54.3 average) - Gilmer (3A)

467 (51.8) -- Gorman (1A)

465 (51.6) -- Roscoe (1A)

463 (51.4) -- Diboll (3A)

452 (50.2) -- Munday (1A)

450 (50.0) -- Granger (1A)

441 (49.0) -- Alto (1A)

431 (47.8) -- Southlake Carroll (5A)

422 (46.8) -- Caddo Mills (1A)

ALTO LEADS STATE WITH 23 STRAIGHT

Alto owns the state's current longest winning string at 23 games. The defending 1A-I state champions were 14-0 last season. Mart, the defending 2A-II kingpin, has won 22 in a row.

DISTRICT WIN STREAKS

46 - Galena Park North Shore (5A)

37 - Southlake Carroll (5A)

38 - Highland Park (4A)

31 - Edcouch-Elsa (4A)

33 - Gilmer (3A)

OLD RIVALS

Amarillo and Lubbock clash for the 92nd time this weekend in a 2-5A contest with playoff implications. The Amarillo Golden Sandies, the state's all-time winningest school, holds a 75-14-2 advantage in the series, including a state record 33 consecutive victories over the Westerners.

Denison and Sherman will not be in the playoffs this season so their 94th meeting will have to serve as this year's highlight. Sherman leads the series 56-31-6.

CAN WHITESBORO DO IT?

Since the state playoffs began in 1920, Whitesboro has yet to be an entry -- the longest such span in the UIL history. Chances are the Bearcats are going to miss out again unless they upset #3 ranked terror Celina in Friday's finale. Although Whitesboro can still finish in a three way tie even with a loss, the 'Cats would come up short in a point system with Pilot Point and Prosper.

On the other hand, Palacios (29-3A) is returning to the playoffs for the first time since its 1964 Class 2A (now 3A) state championship run.
