Lamar looks to secure SLC Championship with wins over A&M Corpus Christi and UTSA

BEAUMONT - With the Southland Conference title on the line, the Lamar University volleyball team will close out the regular season against Texas A&M Corpus Christi and UT-San Antonio on Friday night and Saturday afternoon at McDonald Gym.

Lamar begins the weekend series at 7 p.m. Friday against the Islanders of A&M Corpus Christi and will wrap up play on Saturday at 1 p.m. against the Roadrunners of UTSA. The Lady Cards are just two wins away from securing their first conference title in five years. The last Lamar volleyball team to win the Southland Conference title was the 2001 team that posted a 17-3 record in conference play.

The Lady Cardinals enter the weekend with a 13-1 record in SLC play and a 22-8 overall record after picking up wins over Central Arkansas and Northwestern State last weekend. Lamar has won 18 of their last 20 matches, including a 14-match win streak, which is the second-longest in school history.

Leading the way for the Lady Cardinals this year has been Kaci Brewer and Molli Abel who are averaging 3.22 and 3.21 kills per game respectively. Abel is the league leader in hitting percentage a .378 and is the team leader in blocks with 1.14 rejections per game. Brewer, in addition to her offensive production, has been strong defensively with 2.72 digs per game.

Setter Adrianne Meengs has proven to be a versatile threat for the Lady Cards, posting four triple-doubles on the year and earning three SLC offensive player of the week awards. She is averaging 11.15 assist, 2.15 kills and 2.08 digs per game and has 25 service aces on the year. Meengs picked up her third offensive player of the week award this week.

Andrea Hamilton and Destiny Mason have provided the bulk of the defensive play for LU this season, averaging 4.93 and 3.23 digs per game respectively. Mason has also been a weapon offensively, knocking down 2.32 kills per game. Lauren Holdorff has been a strong defensive presence at the net for the Lady Cards, averaging 1.03 blocks per game.

 

The Islanders enter Friday's match with a 4-10 Southland Conference record, and a 7-20 overall record. They are led by Christie Feliz who is averaging 3.20 kills per game, while Lauren Paslay is averaging 3.09 kills per game. Molly McCabe runs the Corpus Christi offense with 11.51 assists per game, while Laura North averages a league-best 5.98 digs per game

The Roadrunners enter the weekend with a 13-18 overall record and a 5-9 record in conference play. They are led by Victoria Prior's 3.84 kills per game, while Kendra Rowland averages 3.71 kills per game. Rebecca Hrapmann has passed out 8.05 assists per game and Audrey Hiser leads their defense with 4.80 digs per game

After the weekend series the Lady Cardinals will play in the Southland Conference tournament hosted by UTSA at the Convocation Center in San Antonio, Texas. The tournament will begin on Friday, November 16, with Lamar's match time yet to be determined.
