Memorial plans to reload around Brown, Buckner

By Cody Pastorella

The Port Arthur News

If the The Memorial Titans reach their lofty goals, they are going to need seniors J'Covin Brown and Jacovin Buckner to mature into leaders this season.

The Titans lost 11 seniors from last season's roster, and Memorial head coach Terrul Henderson said having so many seniors on last year's 29-6 (12-3 in District 21-5A) team made winning fairly easy.

"We're going to have to fill the voids," Henderson said. "We have good young talent on this team, so we're going to need (Brown and Buckner) to lead that talent. Both of those guys had great seasons as juniors, but they are seniors now and they are going to have to work hard to mature as student athletes.

"I think they are learning their new role and they are both working hard to become the players we need them to be in order for this team to be successful."

Brown is a highly recruited 6-3 scoring guard. Hoopscoops.com has Brown listed as one of the top-recruits in the entire country. Texas, Baylor, Oklahoma and Cincinnati are the schools most interested in Brown's services.

Brown averaged more than 26.2 points per game last season. He hit the 50-point mark once and had more than 30 points in 14 games last season.

Buckner, a 6-foot guard, averaged 13 points per game.

Senior Domonique Thomas, juniors Tevin Turner and JeKore Tyler and sophomores Shaquillie White, JaMarqus Jones, Darius Harris, Clarence Thomas and Wendell Piere fill out the rest of Memorial's varsity roster.

"We have the talent to be a good team," Henderson said. "We're just going to have to work hard and take one game at a time. We have an extremely competetive non-district (Memorial finished as district runner up behind Kingwood last season) schedule and we have a competetive tournament season.

"We have some tough games ahead of us and that will help us grow. There are a lot of variables that will have to come together so we'll just wait and see where we stand once district gets here."

Memorial's first regular season game comes against Ozen at home on Tuesday. That game is set to start at 5 p.m. The Titans will play in the Central Tournament Nov. 29 through Dec. 1, the Holiday Classic in Lake Charles on Dec. 20-22 and the Gamble Classic Dec. 27-29.

The Titans also have a game against Houston Yates at the Toyota Center in Houston on Dec. 8. That game is set to start at 1 p.m. Memorial's first district game is at home against Humble on Dec. 14.

All district games are set for 7 p.m. Kingwood, West Brook, Humble, Channelview and Memorial should all challenge for playoff spots this season.
