BEAUMONT - The Lamar University women's basketball team will tip off the 2007-08 season on Saturday at 4 p.m., taking on the LSU-Shreveport Lady Pilots at the Montagne Center. The game is the beginning of a double header, as the Lamar men take on Central Oklahoma at 7 p.m. in their final exhibition game.

The Lady Cardinals enter Saturday's game on the heels of a 99-62 win over the Houston Jaguars on Tuesday night. The game against Houston was the second of two exhibitions for LU. They dropped their first exhibition of the season 66-62 to the All Stars last Saturday.

In their two exhibition games the Lady Cardinals split, losing 66-62 to the All Stars and winning 99-62 over the Houston Jaguars. Freshman Tamara Abalde led the way in both exhibitions for Lamar, scoring 17 points against the All Stars and 18 points against the Jaguars for a 17.5 points per game average.

Ashley Crawford, Nikki Williams and Brittney Williams all averaged double figures in scoring in the two exhibitions, with Crawford averaging 14.5 points, Nikki Williams scoring 12.5 points per game and Brittney Williams averaging 10.5 points per game. Emily Spickler was also active offensively, averaging nine points per game.

LSU Shreveport is 1-1 on the year after opening the season with a 66-64 win over Paul Quinn College on Sunday and a 72-64 loss at Centenary on Tuesday night in Shreveport, La. The Lady Pilots are led in scoring by Whitney Hollins and Edie Leonards, while Quan Joseph leads the way on the boards.

After Saturday's game the Lady Cardinals will hit the road for their first big test of the season, taking on the Oklahoma State Cowgirls at Gallagher-Iba Arena at 7 p.m. Monday night.
